About Joel
Growing up on the small island of Saipan, where chess players were rare, I spent my childhood hooked on the game, playing all day on the Free Internet Chess Server (FICS) - one of the first online chess servers ever! Life's journey eventually took me to South Korea, where I moved from online play to the competitive world of international tournaments and elite academy coaching. I have 5 years of experience teaching chess - including coaching members of the South Korean Youth National Chess Team.

I typically do 60 minute online/in-person lessons.
Typical Lesson Content:
Warm-up with a interesting position/puzzle.
Game Analysis and/or Strategy: Reviewing your games to correct mistakes and improve decision-making. Learning about opening/middle-game/endgame techniques.
Practice Game: Games with players of a similar strength where we discuss thought process as we go.
*Note on Tactics: To maximize our time, I expect students to practice puzzles independently so we can focus on strategy and analysis during our sessions. I can offer tips on how to practice tactics, and give tactic homework as well.
Qualifications:
2000 FIDE Rated player (2500 on Chess.com) with international tournament experience.
Expertise in both 1-on-1 private tutoring and elite academy coaching.
I love working with students who have a true passion for the game and are ready to take their skills to a competitive level.
