About Rianne

Every student I've entered for ABRSM Grades 1–6 has passed — all at merit or above. Every Grade 5 Theory student has passed with distinction.

I passed ABRSM Grade 8 with distinction and Grade 5 Theory with merit, and I'm currently preparing for my ATCL diploma.

I've taught over 25 students, from complete beginners to advanced players, children through to adults. Several have stayed with me for more than a year ,my longest was over 3 years and three families have brought both of their children to me. That matters more to me than any exam result: it means the lessons are somewhere people want to keep coming back to.

I teach from my home studio in Camberley on a Kawai baby grand, and online for students further away.

Playing the piano is where I go to think clearly, and what I most want is for students to find that too. whether they're heading for Grade 8 or just want to play something they love properly.

I don't only exist between 4 and 5 on a Tuesday. Students message me between lessons with questions, or send me a piece they've found and want to learn. That's always welcome.

Every student is different, so I don't teach from one method. Some want exams, some want to play film music, some want to sit down after work and unwind. All of those are good reasons to learn.

In a lesson we'll work on technique, sight-reading and theory alongside the pieces but always with the piece as the reason. I'll explain why a hand shape or fingering works rather than asking you to trust me, because that's what makes progress stick when I'm not in the room.

Exams. I prepare students for ABRSM and Trinity, Grades 1 to 8, including Grade 5 Theory. I'll tell you honestly when a student is ready and when they need another term. I'll be honest about when a student is ready. If another term would turn a nervous pass into a confident one, I'll say so and it's always the family's decision.

Beginners. No experience needed and no age limit. Adults who stopped as children and always meant to go back are some of my favourite students.

Between lessons I'll give you a clear practice plan : what to work on and how, not just "practise this." You're welcome to send me a recording or a question any time.

On pace. Everyone learns at their own speed and I don't compare students to each other. We mark the milestones as they come. There's no such thing as a stupid question at my piano and nobody is ever behind.

Mandarin and Cantonese songs. I'm a native Mandarin and Cantonese speaker, so if you want to play and understand Chinese pop or classical pieces — lyrics, tones, meaning and all

Learn more about Rianne

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I started learning piano when I was 6 and felt really passionate when I was 13 years old. My favourite instrument is the piano.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

Soft classical music has always my favourite.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

The most difficult one would be grade 7 with theory in piano.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

I think the most complicated instrument to master is the oboe. It requires the player to control multiple things at the same time. It demands a lot from the mouth, lips, tongue and breath because the sound of the instrument's notes isn't just controlled by finger placement.
  • What are your keys to success?

The key to success in piano really requires lots of hard work and patience and most importantly a passion for music.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

I would really love to meet Lang Lang,Yuja Wang and Louis Lotie. I want to hear their personal experience about them and their journey with music
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

I hated sight reading when I was young but I really want to learn a lot of new pop songs quickly. I always get bored practising pieces over and over again. Eventually, my sight reading improved and I could play with both hands immediately after I scanned through the pieces.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

There's never a shortcut, practice day by day you will see the difference eventually.
