About Maddy

Since Graduating with a degree in Drama, I discovered not only my love for acting but people’s ways of communicating. Whether this was while narrating a documentary or working in a rehearsal room, I was surrounded by different means of expression and, significantly, an abundance of different accents. This curiosity drove me to pursue Accent coaching.

I am a qualified LAMDA exams teacher, attaining my LSPP (LAMDA Syllabus Performance: Practice, for Acting and Musical Theatre) in 2023. I also learned training essentials in the Voice for Performance course at Central School of Speech and Drama (2024).

I especially enjoy Accent Reduction because working with curious, non-native speakers continually inspires me. I am always learning new aspects of speech from different parts of the world, which is exactly why it is some of the most exciting work in voice training. I always love how reciprocal this work is: learning as much along the way from my learners as they learn from me.

About the lesson

Looking to perfect your English accent and improve your pronunciation? Ages 18+ only

In my sessions, together we’ll discover your voice as a muscle and learn how you can use accent training tools to shift your pronunciation to create authentic English (Modern RP) sounds.

Now, a bit about my lesson structure:

As we are all unique in the ways that we learn, during our introduction, you and I will explore the intentions you have for our sessions and any methods of absorbing information that work best for you. These may include visual aids, shadowing techniques and musical comparisons. If these methods are not known to you yet, we will discover these as our sessions continue.

During our next sessions, we'll use the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) to break down key sounds - the vowels and consonants - used in various English literary texts. The IPA will act as a bridge between your native accent and English, helping us to navigate what shifts are necessary to make you sound fluent in your English expression. Having the IPA up your sleeve will also be invaluable as a learning tool in your future independent practice.

As we dive into accent fundamentals, my aim is to make these clear and accessible to learners at all levels. My core practice is based on the idea that accent fundamentals come together like a layer cake: vowels are the sponge, consonants are the icing and musicality is the plate you serve on. Building your cake layer by layer will help secure these sounds and maintain consistency while tuning your mouth and ears accurately to authentic English speech.

My sessions are typically 1 hour in length, but I can extend to 2 hours if circumstances require. I provide written summaries of each session and send helpful listening resources along the way.

So whether you’ve just landed a new corporate job and need to prepare for your first presentation, or generally want to feel more comfortable chatting with your friends over lunch, I’m here to help boost your confidence and fluency in a fun and relaxed environment!
