A native of New York, Warren studied trumpet performance at the prestigious Juilliard School, where he earned both a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Trumpet Performance. Warren further honed his skills at renowned music festivals such as the Empire Brass Quintet Symposium, Tanglewood Music Center, Waterloo Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, Yale Norfolk Summer Chamber Music Festival, BANFF Summer Music Festival, and Scotia Music Festival. There, he studied with some of the finest teachers in the field, including Roger Voisin, Armando Ghitalla, Lou Ranger, Chris Gekker, Philip Smith, Charles Schlueter, Robert Nagel, and Rolf Smedvig.
Warren's performance career is as impressive as his academic background. He has toured extensively across the United States, Canada, Europe, and beyond. His solo performances of works by Tartini, Telemann, Schubert, and Mozart have been particularly celebrated.
In addition to his performance career, Warren is a distinguished arranger and published composer. His works, primarily for winds and brass, have been performed to critical acclaim worldwide. My teaching method is rooted in a personalized and student-centered approach. I believe in tailoring lessons to meet each student’s unique needs and goals, whether they are beginners or advanced musicians. My techniques include engaging students through practical exercises and real-time feedback, breaking down complex music theory concepts into digestible parts, integrating trumpet performance to apply theory in a practical context, and fostering creativity and original composition to deepen musical understanding.
A typical lesson plan with me includes several structured segments. We start with a warm-up (5-10 minutes), which involves basic exercises for trumpet players to build technique and endurance, as well as a brief review of previously covered music theory concepts. This is followed by theory instruction (20-30 minutes), where I introduce new concepts such as scales, chord progressions, and harmonic analysis through interactive discussions and examples from various music genres.
Next, we move on to the application phase (20-30 minutes), involving practical exercises on the trumpet and composition and arranging activities to reinforce theoretical knowledge. Performance practice (10-20 minutes) is an essential part of the lesson, where students work on a piece of music that incorporates the theory concepts learned, receive constructive feedback, and get performance tips. We conclude with a Q&A and homework assignment (5-10 minutes), addressing any questions or difficulties, and assigning practice exercises and preparation for the next lesson.
What sets me apart as a tutor is my extensive experience of over 30 years in the music industry as a performer, composer, conductor, and educator. I hold degrees from the Juilliard School, have an extensive performance history, and have published compositions. My versatility in teaching both music theory and trumpet allows me to blend theoretical knowledge with practical skills effectively. I create a supportive and motivating learning environment that encourages student engagement and enthusiasm for music.
My lessons are suitable for all levels, from beginners to advanced students. They are ideal for middle school, high school, and college students, as well as adult learners. These lessons are perfect for those preparing for music exams, auditions, or simply looking to enhance their musical skills and knowledge.
