When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
As a child, I was fascinated by the concept of money and how businesses worked. I was always entrepreneurial from a young age and wanted to start my own business. I became passionate about Finance and Accounting and began pursuing it in High School. I took business as my major in Undergrad and specialized in Finance for my MBA.
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less)
My most robust suites are business, Finance, Accounting, and Excel. I like to discuss the practical applications of these subjects with my students. Most of my students aim to be or are themselves business executives, managers, and entrepreneurs. I find it fascinating when students can find interest in these subjects when they relate to them or realize how important it is to their professional growth.
Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
My high school Accounting & Business teacher, Mr Pradeep, developed my interest in business and its particular fields of Finance and accounting. He has a method of captivating students to follow the subject and engrained me in business and accounting fundamentals. With all my aspirations, I feel he has been the number one reason for me to keep going in the field.
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
Patience, Persistency, Listening, and Understanding. Most students that approach me are university students who often have trouble understanding their professors who speak in industry jargon and technicalities. They forget that the student on the other side is not as proficient as they are and should look at the material from their perspective. I believe in the KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid method, in which the newest students can grasp the concept. As a tutor, I try to reach the level of the student and build their proficiency from there.
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.
In my Undergrad, I needed money to provide for my family and myself. Rather than work under someone else for a minimal salary, I took the risk and started my own tuition business. I used to tutor around 30 students a month in regular batches and would save enough money to give to my family and my needs. I felt a sense of accomplishment when my students accomplished their academic or professional goals.
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?
Accounting and Finance deal with numbers and principles and are usually the subjects that are regarded as one of boring subjects in academia. It was a challenge to make inherently dull topics interesting. However, when I applied what I was learning to a hypothetical or potential business, it suddenly started making sense. Business subjects often involve a variety of principles, laws, and regulations by different boards of authority that must be followed. I still sometimes find it challenging to keep up with these standards and continuously develop myself to improve them.
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
I do have a passion for solving problems and reaching a conclusion. When I collaborate with students to solve their academic hurdles, I often feel that teaching is rewarding when my students accomplish their goals. I am passionate about teaching accounting and Finance and pursuing the subjects in-depth.
What makes you a Superprof?
My definition of a Superprof would be a tutor who understands where their student is coming from because I was a student once that used to struggle with the subjects I teach. A Superprof should also inspire their students to become tutors by passing their knowledge to their students.
