Methodology

I'm a gentle and relaxed tutor who tailors classes to the individual requirements of students. I've been preparing students for Drama School Entrance auditions for 5 years - previous pupils have accepted places at RADA and LAMDA!

DRAMA SCHOOL AUDITIONS.
- Practical working of speeches.
- Verse speaking technique.
- Voice work (inc. breath support, articulation, range, resonance etc)
- Suggested pre-audition vocal warm-ups.
- Advice on speech choice.
- Guidance on audition procedure.

I have also experience preparing younger students for NYT and Sylvia Young auditions.
_______________________________________________________________________________________

All classes are available 1 hour, 1.5 and 2 hour sessions.

During the week I prefer to teach at my home in Finchley - at the weekend am happy to travel if it's preferable (Finchley, Archway, Highgate, Camden, Angel, South Kensington, Sloane Square, Chelsea, Westminister etc).

One of our best tutors! High-quality profile, qualified and response guaranteed. Calum will plan your first lesson with care.

Background

I graduated LAMDA in July 2012 and have been preparing students for the Drama School audition circuit ever since. Some of my previous students have accepted places at RADA, LAMDA etc.

I continue to work as a professional actor; last year I was in the West End/BBC production of HAMLET (with Andrew Scott) and MARY STUART (with Juliet Stevenson). I've also performed with the RSC, National Theatre, NTScotland, Bath Theatre Royal, Birmingham REP, Manchester Royal Exchange and around the world in China and Russia. In 2016 I took the title role in a $12M IMAX movie that filmed in the Amazon Rainforest - it's currently being shown in IMAX cinemas all over the USA.

Perfect! Calum managed to secure my daughter a drama scholarship for her sixth form in just a few lessons. His knowledge is current and extensive. He recommended material and knew how to get to know the characters involved. My daughter felt a bit apprehensive at first about a webcam lesson but was put at ease immediately. I think he is a natural teacher...I could not recommend hm more strongly.

Calum is very supportive, you feel absolutely comfortable asking him for help or advice at any time. The help doesn’t stop at the end of the lesson. He pays a lot of attention, perceives things very acutely and works his way around who you are and how you experience acting, gives you the freedom and confidence to explore. I must honestly say that I had lost a bit of the joy I used to have when I first started acting and was surprised when I started to feel it again working with him, to my greatest joy. If you don’t have fun in it, there is just no point in doing it. You have fun, you are pushed and supported. Most importantly, you trust yourself to go further and put the work in because you know you are believed in. He is, in my humble opinion, the best tutor you could ever have. I can do nothing else but recommend him a thousand times.

Calum has a naturally calming personality that cannot be taught. I was extremely nervous before auditioning for drama school but with calum's impressive knowledge and constructive teaching I flew through all my auditions, getting many recalls and eventually a place at a top drama school. I Would highly recommended him to anyone seeking acting help. He will go that extra mile for you and genuinely wants to extract your best potential.

I have known Calum Finlay for over ten years. He is extremely trustworthy and fantastic to collaborate with. I have witnessed him being a very patient and tutor. We have worked on several theatrical projects together, and he has always worked diligently to ensure the project success.

I have seen him teach 1:1 and also in a group and Calum's technique is very adaptable to who he is working with.

His impressive work ethic and passion is the reason I would recommend him to anyone!

I've worked with Calum as a actor, writer, director and workshop facilitator and he is a wonderful person to work with. He is committed and encouraging, putting the emphasis on whatever it is you are working on, whether that be a piece of text, an improvisation or an idea, developing your skills as a performer rather than fixing your flaws.

Because he has worked with such a interesting and varied group of theatre companies and directors (RSC, Told By An Idiot, Robert Icke), he has an immense amount of knowledge to give to a pupil who is starting to delve into their own interests in plays and theatre or if you just want to build your confidence. He is very industry savy and can help with your professional development.

I would also reccomend working with Calum because he is kind, patient and fun.

Calum is a tremendous tutor: clever, knowledgeable, highly efficient, inspirational, fun to be around. My daughter has gained an immense amount from her sessions with him.

Calum helped me immensely in my audition preparation process - he suggested some speeches to me and one of them just happened to be the perfect one, which I am so grateful for, because it's not easy at all to find something that both fits the type of actor you are but also resonates with you. He is extremely supportive and knows how to ask the right questions to help the process of "unlocking" the speech. Every time after working with him I felt like I was able to go deeper into the essence of the speech, but we also had a lot of fun in the process. I don't think I'd be able to find things which I've discovered without his help!

Calum was highly recommended to me by a fellow actor when I was searching for help with a self tape for Nina Gold. I couldn't believe how much he got out of me on screen, a form of acting I am less comfortable with. He put me completely at ease in front of the camera and got me to a standard that I never would have been able to reach alone. I have since returned to him for help with numerous self tapes, he has such a good eye for screen work and is truly brilliant at getting the best out of actors. I couldn't recommend him as a acting tutor highly enough.

M
Matt

An excellent teacher, patient, intelligent and insightful, he is hugely knowledgeable about theatre having worked at the highest end of the profession for the last 6 years. Tailors lessons to students needs and abilities.

R
Ralph

Calum helped out at a very early stage of the audition process and it was a brilliant kickstarter. He's a very calming presence to have in a room, especially dealing with something that could be very nerve-inducing. Calum created a dialogue in which he listened to what I had to say and gave his own interpretation. Following our sessions, I got into RADA, LAMDA and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

D
Dora

I got in touch with Calum regarding help with my drama school auditions. As a tutor he supported me through each stage of the process and has a clear understanding of what drama schools are looking for. He is 100% reliable and a genuinely lovely person. Calum was instrumental in my offer of a place at The Manchester School of Theatre.

Interview with Calum

QUESTION 01 | 08
When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?
Calum — I started by joining my local youth theatre, Playbox Theatre, when I was 12 years old. I was incredibly lucky that, alongside acting classes, I was offered the opportunity to perform in shows with them - eventually I was offered a part as a child actor at the Royal Shakespeare Company. I loved it and haven't looked back!
QUESTION 02 | 08
Which artists or works affect you the most?
Calum — Mark Rylance, Andrew Scott, Ria Zmitrowicz. Beyond the world of actors I like the visual art of Louise Bourgeois and the music of Laura Marling.
QUESTION 03 | 08
What are the qualities and skill required to succeed in this area?
Calum — A strong work ethic and flexibility. It's imperative that you prepare diligently but are flexible enough to be affected by offers made by other actors and directors.
QUESTION 04 | 08
What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?
Calum — Creativity isn't something that you can bottle and use on demand. If you're not feeling creative it's important to give yourself space to let yourself daydream - that might mean going for a long walk, practising yoga or even knitting. When you're ready, return to your project and remember that there's no rush to finish it.
QUESTION 05 | 08
How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?
Calum — It's my belief that it has never been more important to understand how to communicate: to express your thoughts clearly and articulately; to speak with confidence and fluency; and to effectively modulate your voice in a way that reflects your intention. I've seen, first hand, the transformative effect of LAMDA Exams and Acting Classes on young people.
QUESTION 06 | 08
What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?
Calum — In 2017 I performed in HAMLET in the West End alongside one of my favourite actors, Andrew Scott, and with a director I had admired since I was at drama school, Rob Icke. It was a real highlight of my career and I learned a huge amount.
QUESTION 07 | 08
Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?
Calum — I had a wonderful surprise earlier this year when a pupil I had been teaching for 4 years achieved a 97/100 in her Grade 8 LAMDA Examination. I wasn't surprised at her success but I was surprised, looking back at how her grades had steadily improved over the years, at how far she had come.
QUESTION 08 | 08
Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?
Calum — There's no secret! I try to listen be guided by the thoughts and ideas of the person in front of me.
