About Sophie Olivia

Piano teacher | Composer | Content Creator

I’ve been playing classical piano for over 25 years and am currently composing my debut solo piano album. I also share piano practice tips for adults on social media, where I have over 16K followers across platforms (example video below). I really enjoy breaking down complex concepts into clear, bite-sized lessons that help students build confidence at the piano. With a background in Fine Art, I also like to incorporate creative elements such as animations into my videos, making learning more engaging, accessible, and enjoyable.

As a teacher, my main career goal is to develop a complete methodology specifically for adult beginners, teaching essential technique through music that is simple yet beautiful from the very first lesson. I haven’t been able to find any method books that fully incorporate this approach, so I am creating my own. In the meantime, I use an existing method book supplemented with my own compositions, ensuring that adult beginners always have real, expressive music to play right from the beginning.

As an artist and performer, my ultimate goal is to develop my piano album, “Phoenix: The Fall and Rise”, into an immersive audiovisual piano performance and tour worldwide. This album tells the story of my recovery from severe burnout and chronic illness. It explores healing through grief, maintaining hope through continuous setbacks, and emerging stronger and more resilient on the other side. During my Fine Art degree, I created immersive video projection installations, and I’d love to incorporate this into live piano performances. Storytelling and healing are at the heart of my creative work, and I would love to share my music with others to help support their own journeys of reflection and resilience.

In 2018 I was awarded a scholarship to study piano performance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire, but wasn’t able to attend due to chronic illness. Since then, I’ve been determined to continue pursuing music as I recovered, and I’m now working towards the ATCL performance diploma, which I plan to take this year. The process of recovery taught me resilience, patience, and the power of small, consistent steps. These are lessons I now bring into my teaching to help students navigate setbacks, adapt their practice to real life, and enjoy steady progress over time.

Experience Overview:
2012: ABRSM Grade 8 Piano (Distinction)
2016: BA Fine Art, University of the Arts London (1st Class Honours)
2017–2019: Teaching piano full-time (~28 hrs/week)
2018: Awarded BMus Piano Performance scholarship, Trinity Laban Conservatoire (however I was unable to attend due to illness)
2025: Fully recovered, composing my debut solo piano album, working towards ATCL diploma, and teaching again

Lessons follow a method book to provide clear structure and progression, alongside simple yet beautiful pieces I’ve composed especially for adult beginners. From your very first lesson, you’ll be playing real music, rather than feeling stuck with just boring exercises or children’s songs, while still developing solid, essential technique.

A central goal of my teaching is to help adult students progress from complete beginner — whether you’ve never touched the piano before or have played a little but feel stuck at the beginner stage — to a confident intermediate level. Reaching this stage opens up a wide range of repertoire and allows you to play many pieces you genuinely love, from contemporary composers such as Einaudi or Yiruma to a wide range of classical music, including works by Bach, Beethoven, and Chopin. It’s a real pleasure to help adults develop a meaningful, long-term hobby and to guide you as you experience the enjoyment and confidence that comes with steady progress over time.

I have a deep personal interest in the behavioural psychology of learning piano as an adult, and regularly read books, articles, and research in this area. I’ll support you in building a sustainable daily practice routine you can stick to, while working through the mental hurdles that often hold adult learners back, such as perfectionism, self-doubt, or the feeling that it’s too late to learn. My aim is to help piano practice fit comfortably into everyday life and remain enjoyable over the long term.

If you’d like to start lessons with me, or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

look forward to hearing from you!
