About Jacob

My name is Jacob Mao and I have been teaching piano since 2022 (4 years). As a result, I have seen a huge variety of students and have taught complete beginners to proficient pianists of Grade 8 AMEB levels.

I, myself, have been playing piano since 2014 (12 years) and have acquired an AMEB AMusA. I also received full marks in the HSC Music Extension Performance course and 94/100 in Music 2 with performance as an elective. I am currently working on my LMusA.

I believe that teaching is an incredibly fulfilling and exciting experience. I get to pass on the knowledge and skills that I have worked hard to obtain as well as the passion that I have for Music and especially for playing the Piano. It is incredibly exciting when my own students fulfill their own personal goals and achievements, such as getting an A in an exam or learning a piece they've always wanted to learn and performing it well.

I cannot wait to pass on my knowledge, skills and passion to you!

About the lesson

I am incredibly enthusiastic and excited about teaching new people.

My teaching style is particularly humorous and light-hearted, in that I like to break down more difficult concepts such as music notation or the way the music should sound and feel through funny examples and metaphors that really stick with the student. In that way they not only learn quickly and remember well, but also enjoy the lesson and the process of practicing piano. I am especially willing to play the piano with the student, such as through duets so that they can directly copy my style and technique.

At the same time, I also pay close attention to their technique and their playing, and will note any errors or any improvements they can make as soon as they appear, especially before these mistakes become habits.
As an experienced pianist myself, I also champion hard work and effort and will show explicitly to the student what strategies they should use to practice and how long they should spend time on it. I am willing to also sit down with the student and help them practice by telling them which sections they should play again and what practicing strategies to use in order to improve. Any advice or practice routines that I give to the student will also be directly communicated to their parent.

I am capable of teaching complete beginners to a Grade 8 AMEB level no matter the age. Lessons can range from 30 minutes to an hour depending on what is requested. I will also provide my own opinion as to how long lessons should last
