My method is to introduce the student to the material in a way that is catchy and easy for their short term memory. For example, I turn words into songs or I use flash cards with visual aids, etc. I also believe in repetition, until the student understands, but also moving on to topics they are strong in. I believe in encouraging the student with positive affirmations so they feel confident in their learning.
