About Joe
I will be teaching from Japan which is UTC +9 hours. My hours are in the evening from 5 p.m. - 10 p.m. Tokyo Time.
I have a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the State University of New York at Purchase. I also have a Master of Fine Arts in English Literature in Creative Writing from the City University of New York at Queens College.
I've taught English for over 30 years in Japan.
For 25 years I ran my own English language school.
I worked at both an American senior high school as well as several Japanese junior and senior high schools.
I also taught business English at companies like Mitsubishi, Minolta, Nippon Sharyo, Nidek, Chub Denryoku and Futaba Sangyo.
My hobbies include playing the guitar, banjo and bass. I enjoy the outdoors, love traveling and have traveled widely in Europe, Asia and a bit in the US. I love reading both fiction and non-fiction of every sort. I also love watching films of every genre. I look forward to speaking with you.

My teaching methods are various since I've taught English for over 30 years. I believe that conversation should be natural and as stress-free as possible. I do not interrupt, but take notes and make corrections later. Typically, I don't focus on pronunciation unless it becomes a comprehension problem for the listener. But if you want to focus on pronunciation, I have spent most of my English teaching career teaching phonics and proper American pronunciation so I'm more than happy to teach it to you if you wish. My lesson plan would depend on your goals for that particular lesson. Typically 5-10 minutes warm-up free conversation. Then 10 minutes introducing the topic and going over any problematic grammar or vocabulary. Then 20 minutes practicing or discussing the topic. Whatever time left would be used either reviewing the concepts or further practice. What sets me apart as a teacher is my level of education combined with long and varied teaching experiences. I've taught in the US and at several junior and senior high schools in Japan as well as ran my own English school for 25 years. I'm widely knowledgeable on a range of subjects and have always been fascinated with the English language. I only teach senior high school students and up and only at a high beginner to low intermediate level of English proficiency on up. I do not teach beginners or children under high school age UNLESS they spent time abroad and are at a high level of English competence.
