About Katie

I've been a professional artist selling paintings since 2014. Recently I gained a Certificate IV in School Based Education Support and have been working with children since August 2022 as an Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) educator. I have a valid working with children check and current qualifications in child protection and first aid. I have a natural affinity for creating a bond with young students and understand the need to create an intrinsic learning environment. This combined with the skills I've gained working in OSHC are what have made me successful in my chosen field.

About the lesson

For students aged 4 to 7 years old, I will focus on teaching simple attributes. Color theory will talk about what primary colors are, did you know you can't mix any colors to make yellow, blue or red? Students will learn big words to describe color, i.e., instead of red you can say rose, crimson or peach. Students will also learn how to mix colors to make new ones using colored pencils. This includes learning how to hold the pencil properly, shading techniques and coloring neatly to create smooth textures. Lastly, I teach about drawing shapes in both 2D and 3D forms and how you can use this to create cool pictures. A typical lesson can look like this: a student selects a coloring page and whilst we color it we talk about our choice of color. How to mix colors and describe colors. A collaborative approach the student can help guide how the lesson will go and any future lessons. I end each lesson with an art-themed game. Generally, a parent will be present for the lesson of which they can take part and encourage the child to learn.

My 9yo son was apprehensive about getting a tutor and was really not interested, but Katie was engaging and grabbed his attention as soon as she arrived. His attitude towards literacy has changed and as soon as she left he asked when she was coming back - he couldn't wait another week.
