About Joshua

I am an award-winning First Class Honours Biochemistry graduate from the University of Southampton (ranked 1st in my cohort) with a deep passion for teaching and a range of experience in mentoring and science communication.

For almost four years, I have mentored 25+ undergraduate Biology, Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences students from diverse backgrounds at the University of Southampton. Through this experience, I have been able to help students overcome their hurdles in understanding biological concepts. I have further honed and developed my ability to present complex ideas in an engaging and accessible way through communication-focused roles at Winchester Science Centre & Planetarium and University Hospital Southampton.

I now work in healthcare consulting and have acquired expertise in healthcare and pharmaceuticals, meaning that I understand how useful the knowledge and skills gained through A-Level Biology are and how they can be applied in the real world. I want to share my love of science with others and am passionate about helping students achieve their full potential in A-Level Biology and beyond!

About the lesson

Why choose me as a tutor? Although I achieved a high A* grade in A-Level Biology, I initially found this subject very challenging and had to overcome many hurdles in grasping concepts and performing well in exams. This means that I know not only how to reach an understanding of the subject's most complex concepts but also how to navigate its difficult exams!

My teaching approach is interactive and exam-focused, and I place a strong emphasis on keeping learning engaging and interesting! I primarily focus on understanding your individual needs to address any areas of the A-Level Biology specification and assessment around which you would like to become more confident. The content and the frequency of lessons can be tailored to your preference.

A typical lesson involves going through materials that I have prepared beforehand, which include step-by-step breakdowns of concepts, visually engaging diagrams, and relevant examples. I ensure that the lesson is discussion-based as I believe this is key for reaching an understanding of complex biological concepts. After the lesson, I then share these materials with you, along with tailored notes for your revision, worksheets to consolidate your understanding, and recommended revision techniques and resources. I then review these worksheets before our next lesson and go through any remaining areas of uncertainty with you.
