About Kathlyne
I am Ph.D. candidate in Soil Science at the University of Saskatchewan researching gasoline and diesel contaminated sites with industry partners. My thesis is studying benzene distribution in soils, adsorption mechanisms, and microbial biodegradation. My B.Sc. Ag (or BSA) is in Environmental Science with a minor in Applied Plant Ecology (classes focused on plant identification). I have worked in a laboratory for 7 years primarily working with contaminated soils, liquid microbial cultures, infrared spectroscopy, and synchrotron science characterizing iron minerals. Additionally, I am experienced in field work involving soil sampling for contaminated sites and rangelands, and plant identification and Canadian soil classification in grasslands and forests.
Communication skills:
I have attended and presented at many conferences, both nationally and internationally. I am a strong presenter as I focus on concise and visually appealing powerpoint slides and a clear and casual, yet professional speaking style. I have strong science writing skills using an active voice style and avoid over-complicated language for ease of reading scientific literature. As well, I have taken courses and am knowledgable/have experience in building concise and eye catching resumes and strong advice on preparing for job interviews.
Tutoring/Mentoring Experience:
I have taught environmental science labs at the university and tutored students in soil chemistry. As well, I mentored an undergraduate student for their thesis. This involved teaching them experimental design, laboratory techniques, data analysis, creating figures in RStudio and Microsoft Excel, writing, and presentation skills. I have also tutored students in Mining Engineering Technology for the statistical analysis and report writing for their capstone projects.
Computer Skills:
I have extensive experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. I am comfortable using and teaching the computational language R (RStudio) and using it for univariate and (limited) multivariate statistics.
Outside of academia, I am a dance instructor with professional ballet and contemporary dance experience, a hobby beekeeper, a painter, and a fisher person. I believe that hobbies are an important part of a well rounded life, especially when academics can become very overwhelming at times.

My approach to teaching is based on my own experience and learning style. Over the years I have found that breaking down the material as simple as possible and building up from there is the most effective for those who are struggling with memorizing. I am most comfortable with teaching how to approach and understand concepts (ex. long answer/essay type examinations).
In my experience a large barrier to learning can be rooted in anxiety of any kind (or other mental health ailments), lack of confidence, and a lack of motivation. I value open and direct communication and a calm, encouraging, comfortable, and judgment free teaching environment. I prefer to have structured lessons and plans to keep on track to achieving goals. However, I will adjust the schedule depending on progress and individual needs. I have an excellent understanding of the unique thinking patterns that those with ADHD or other mental illness that a person may have and can recommend many tools and work with the student to help harness their full potential.
