About Nick J
I’m a Melbourne-based guitarist, bass player, songwriter and teacher with over 25 years of experience in blues, classic rock and modern rock.
I grew up surrounded by music my father and grandfather were both guitarists and that early influence shaped the way I play and teach today: expressive, musical, and focused on feel over complexity. I offer bass lessons in Werribee and online, working primarily with adult beginners and returning players.
After years of recording, performing and working in the studio, I’ve developed a teaching approach that connects especially well with adults who want to learn in a clear, structured way without feeling overwhelmed.
I understand what it’s like to: start fresh, juggle work and life commitments and want to enjoy music without pressure.
My goal is to make learning guitar feel achievable, inspiring, and genuinely enjoyable.
What I focus on:
• Blues & rock rhythm and lead •
Timing, groove and phrasing
• Simple, practical improvisation
• Building confidence in adult learners
• Helping returning players rebuild technique
• Understanding theory, arrangement and musicality
Lessons are built around a simple framework of rhythm, melody and harmony, giving you a complete foundation rather than just isolated skills.
Alongside teaching, I continue to record, produce and release music, working from my own studio and collaborating across different styles.
This real-world experience means lessons are practical, musical, and tailored to your goals.
Whether you’re picking up the guitar for the first time, getting back into it after years away, or looking to refine your playing, I can help you move forward with a clear plan and real progress.

My bass teaching style is supportive, practical and designed especially for adult beginners and returning musicians who want to build solid foundations, develop groove, and enjoy playing music again. I focus on helping you feel confident holding down a rhythm, locking in with the beat, and understanding how bass shapes the heart of a song.
I offer bass lessons in Werribee and online.
I teach using a mixture of:
• Groove-based exercises (simple, fun patterns that sound good quickly)
• Real blues and rock basslines to build feel and timing
• Ear-training and rhythm work so you learn to “feel” the pocket
• Technique coaching for clean notes, muting, hand position and smooth playing
• Simple theory taught in plain English (scales, intervals, patterns)
• Play-along tracks tailored to your level to build real musical confidence
Lessons are typically 45–60 minutes, either weekly or fortnightly depending on your goals.
I’m a lifelong musician with over 25 years of experience in blues, rock, rhythm-section playing, songwriting and studio recording. As both a guitarist and bassist, I understand how the rhythm and harmony fit together — which helps me teach bass in a way that’s musical, modern and easy to digest.
My bass lessons are ideal for:
• Adult beginners picking up bass for the first time
• Adults returning to music after years away
• Guitarists wanting to learn bass fundamentals
• Players wanting better groove, timing, feel and confidence
• Blues, rock and roots-focused learners
I teach at a relaxed pace, with clear explanation and practical exercises that suit your ability. Whether you want to jam with others, record at home, play your favourite songs, or simply enjoy the instrument, my goal is to help you develop a solid, enjoyable and expressive bass foundation.

Nick brings real studio and gig experience into every lesson, which makes his teaching feel practical and inspiring.
He doesn’t just teach exercises — he shows how things are actually used in real songs and recordings.
That mix of professional experience, clear explanations and a relaxed vibe makes him a teacher I trust, he also has a sense of humour which lighten things up and I really enjoy the lessons.Nick is excellent at building up my confidence on guitar and always makes me feel supported. He explains things clearly, is patient, and genuinely wants me to improve, which is why I trust him and think he’s a great teacher.
Nick really helped me with my sense of rhythm and showed me how important it is for good guitar playing and music. His lessons are clear, relaxed and fun, and he always finds simple ways to make tricky things click. I’d happily recommend him to anyone wanting to feel more confident and solid on guitar.
I do feel like I've worked after each lesson, but its always fun and inspiring.I’ve been taking guitar lessons with Nick J for a while now, and I can honestly say he’s one of the most encouraging and enjoyable teachers I’ve worked with. Nick brings an energy and a humour to the lessons that always makes even the hard things fun.
I’m an adult learner/returning player, and he’s helped me move from feeling a bit lost and stuck to actually feeling confident when I pick up the guitar.
Nick’s teaching style is relaxed but very clear and structured. He explains why we’re doing something, not just what to do, so theory, scales and chords suddenly make sense instead of feeling overwhelming. He’s great at breaking down songs and techniques into small, achievable steps, and he always adapts the lesson to my goals (in my case: blues and rock rhythm and lead). If something isn’t clicking, he’ll immediately find another way to explain or demonstrate it.
One example that stands out: I was really struggling with rhythm and keeping a steady groove while changing chords. Nick created a simple, personalised exercise just for me, tied it to a song I love, and within a couple of weeks I felt a huge difference in my timing and confidence. He celebrated the small wins with me, which really kept me motivated.
I recommend Nick J to other Superprof members because he’s:
• Patient and supportive – never makes you feel silly for not knowing something.
• Experienced and musical – you can tell he’s a serious player and understands many styles, especially blues and rock.
• Organised and reliable – always prepared, on time, and clear about what we’ll work on next.
Nick is absolutely trustworthy: he’s professional, respectful, and genuinely invested in his students’ progress. If you’re an adult beginner, a returning guitarist, or someone who’s been stuck in YouTube overload and wants clear guidance, I’d strongly recommend booking lessons with Nick J.View more recommendations
