About Esther

Hi, I’m Esther aka AJNA, a professional DJ who represents a major international psytrance label, with real-world experience playing festivals, doofs, and club events across Australia. I’m passionate about helping absolute beginners learn how to DJ in a way that feels clear, empowering, and fun; without overwhelm or gatekeeping. My lessons are designed for people who have always wanted to learn to DJ but didn’t know where to start. I focus on practical skills you can actually use, not just theory.

What I can help you with:
• DJ fundamentals & equipment basics
• Beat matching (by ear and with visual tools)
• Mixing & smooth transitions
• Track selection, phrasing & set flow
• Building confidence and developing your own style
• Branding and landing your first gig.

I teach using industry-standard Pioneer DJ equipment, and I tailor every lesson to your goals, musical taste, and learning pace. Whether you want to mix for fun at home, record your first mix, or eventually play parties and events, I’ll help you build strong foundations.

My teaching style is supportive, patient, and beginner-friendly. I believe DJing is a skill anyone can learn with the right guidance, and I aim to create a relaxed, encouraging space where you can ask questions and make mistakes without pressure. I have taught everyone from teens to seniors, and I absolutely love teaching.

• One-on-one private lessons in person in St Kilda

  • 1) When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I come from a musically gifted family and have been passionate about music my entire life. I would consider myself to have a wide variety of music tastes. My favourite musical instrument is the theremin because it's so weird.
  • 2) Is there a particular type music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I have always loved classic trance music and can listen to it any time. It's some of the most beautiful music ever.
  • 3) Explain to us the most difficult or 'riveting' lesson you could personally give to one of your students.

I always let my students know that it is normal to make mistakes when you play live (I've certainly made them) and it is all about how you quickly recover from them. The second thing is that you will probably be rejected a lot when you apply for things. Don't give up, keep going.
  • 4) What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

I've always heard it's the violin but I don't have any experience in playing one.
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

Believing in yourself, consistent practice and dedication, bravely putting yourself out there, having a clear vision for what you want to achieve but being open to it being better than what you expect.
  • 6) Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Raja Ram because he is a true inspiration to me. He's an elderly psytrance legend who still plays at festivals and seems incredibly wise.

David Bowie (RIP) because he was such a creative genius that I would love to get lost in conversation with him.

Dolly Parton because she just seems like the most charming person ever.
  • 7) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your musical journey, or your days at 'music school'.

When I was learning, I practiced every spare waking hour that I possibly could. I practiced so much that I came runner up in a DJing competition a mere six weeks after I first laid hands on some DJ decks. If you want to learn quickly; practice, practice, practice.
  • 8) What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I feel music very deeply. Although the technical skill of DJing can be taught to anyone, the #1 thing that makes a great DJ is their intuition and emotional connection to music to create incredible journeys for dance floors.
