About Tim
I'm Tim, an actor and coach, and the founder of The Film Actors Studio in Byron Bay. I've spent over 15 years across film, television and theatre. After a Fine Arts degree in Acting at QUT I built my early career on stage, in shows like Tender Napalm at the Old Fitz and Ghost Stories at the Sydney Opera House, before most people came to know me as Colby Thorne on Home and Away, where I spent 320-odd episodes. Since then I've worked on Australian and international productions including The Fall Guy, Last King of the Cross, and the upcoming Love Birds.
The work I most want to tell you about, though, is what happens in the studio. Coaching has become one of the great loves of my life. Every week I work with actors on screen technique, auditions, emotional truth, and getting out of their own way. Complete beginners and working professionals both have a place in the room. Some have gone on to film and TV roles, others into drama schools like NIDA.
My coaching is practical and grounded in real experience. The work isn't about performing harder. It's about becoming more available, more relaxed, more specific, and more alive on camera. In a session we might get into a self-tape or audition, script and character work, nerves and confidence, or simply getting out of your head and back into the work.
I care about building a space where you feel safe enough to take real risks, and I'll challenge you when the work needs it. The aim is a process you can actually trust, in class, in auditions, and on the days that matter.
When I'm not coaching or on set, I'm usually surfing, or somewhere in the beautiful chaos of family life with my two little girls. If you want grounded, practical coaching from someone who knows both the craft and the industry, come and work with me.

I’ll help you build confidence, sharpen your craft, but more importantly ill help you curate your own creative process. whether you’re preparing for an audition, applying for drama school, getting ready for a role, or simply wanting to explore acting for the first time.
Every actor is different, so I don’t teach one rigid system. Over the years I’ve studied, tested, and worked with a range of techniques, including Stanislavski, Meisner, Stella Adler, Eric Morris, Practical Aesthetics, and Alexander Technique. I take what is useful, leave what isn’t, and help actors build their own creative tool belt.
Together, we’ll develop a way of working that suits your strengths, your blocks, your goals, and the kind of actor you want to become.
A lot of my work comes back to one simple idea: getting out of your own way.
The camera sees everything. Tension, effort, self-consciousness, truth. So rather than forcing emotion or trying to “perform harder,” we work on relaxation, presence, specificity, behaviour, and connection. We look at what is actually happening in the scene, what your character wants, what they’re trying not to reveal, and how to let the work feel alive rather than planned.
Depending on your goals, we can work on:
Self-tape technique
Screen acting
Audition preparation
Drama school audition prep
Script analysis for stage and screen
Character development
Confidence and nerves
Relaxation and presence on camera
Line learning without locking in delivery
Emotional connection and availability
Listening and reacting truthfully
Industry preparation
Headshots, showreels, agents, casting platforms, and next steps
For audition and self-tape work, I’ll help you prepare like a professional: understanding the tone of the project, making strong choices, building a clear starting position, using the camera well, and finding the most alive version of the scene.
For beginners, we’ll build the foundations properly: how to listen, how to work with text, how to use your body and imagination, and how to feel more comfortable being seen.
For more experienced actors, we’ll go deeper into specificity, emotional access, character work, audition technique, and building a process that holds up under pressure.
My coaching is warm, direct, and practical. I care about creating a safe space where actors can take risks, but I’ll also challenge you when the work needs it. The aim is not to make you dependent on a coach. The aim is to help you build a process you can take into auditions, onto set, into class, and into your own creative life.
I also offer a free short consultation so we can chat about where you’re at, what you’re working towards, and whether I’m the right fit for you.
All levels are welcome — from complete beginners to working actors.
Come ready to work, play, mess it up, find something real, and go again.
