I like to drive the learning of networking by starting with 'Why' something exists - what problem were they trying to solve that resulted in a certain protocol or feature? Once we understand the reason something exists - we can start to look at 'What' it is and then 'How' it works.
I like to approach learning with
a) A theoretical understanding of the topic
b) A deep dive into the topic by whiteboarding it and having an open discussion.
c) Actual live configuration or troubleshooting to understand how it is set up or configured.
