About Xiaoya
Hi, I’m Xiaoya
I’m a qualified teacher with a background in History Education, and I hold a Master’s degree in Social and Political Thought from the University of Leeds. I’ve worked with young people in both teaching and student-support settings, and I currently work in higher education in the UK.
I’m a very responsible and conscientious person, and I take teaching seriously. I’m also naturally patient and service-minded — I genuinely enjoy helping people, understanding what they need, and making sure they feel supported rather than judged or rushed.
I’ve always been interested in much more than language itself. For me, learning Chinese can also be a way of understanding Chinese culture, history and everyday life. So although I’m very happy to teach practical Mandarin, pronunciation, grammar and conversation, I also really enjoy building lessons around what you’re genuinely curious about — whether that’s travelling in China, Chinese history, society and politics, art, literature, food or contemporary culture.
Outside work, I love travelling, watching films and reading, so I’m always interested in different cultures, ideas and ways of life. I think this also makes my lessons more flexible and conversational, because we can often connect Chinese learning with topics you already enjoy.
And if you love food, we’ll probably have plenty to talk about! I also have professional cooking experience, so Chinese food and food culture can easily become part of our lessons. We can learn vocabulary through recipes, talk about regional cuisines, ingredients and dining culture, or simply use food as a fun way to practise real-life Chinese.
I teach both children and adults, from complete beginners to more advanced learners. I’m also happy to work with students who are preparing for exams or studying Chinese more academically.
My lessons are personalised, so I’ll always adjust the content, pace and teaching style around your goals and interests. Whether you want something structured and academic or simply want to enjoy learning Chinese in a relaxed way, I’ll make sure there is a clear direction while keeping the lessons engaging and practical.

I offer personalised Chinese lessons for all ages and levels, from complete beginners to exam preparation. With a background in History Education and Social and Political Thought, as well as experience in teaching and UK higher education, I can also design interest-based lessons around Chinese history, society, politics, art and culture. Each course can be tailored to your goals, whether you want practical language skills, academic support or a deeper understanding of China.
The way I teach will depend a lot on why you’re learning Chinese.
If you’re preparing for an exam, lessons will naturally be more structured, systematic and goal-focused. We’ll work towards the requirements of the exam, identify weaker areas, practise regularly and follow a clearer study plan. These lessons can be a little more intensive because there is usually a specific standard and deadline we’re working towards.
If you’re learning simply because you’re interested in Chinese, the atmosphere can be much more relaxed and exploratory. We can follow your curiosity, spend more time on conversation and culture, and build the language around subjects that actually interest you. There’s still structure and progression, but you don’t need to feel that every lesson is about completing a syllabus or preparing for a test.
For younger learners, I also like to make lessons interactive and visual, using stories, pictures, games, cultural topics and simple activities rather than relying too heavily on textbooks.
Most importantly, I don’t think everyone should learn Chinese in exactly the same way. Your lessons can be shaped around your age, level, interests, learning style and goals. My aim is not only to help you speak and understand Chinese, but also to give you a more genuine understanding of the culture and society behind the language.

Hi, I’d be happy to recommend Xiaoya as a Chinese tutor.
She is a very responsible, patient and reliable person, and she takes teaching seriously. She has a professional background in education and has experience working with young people, so she is very good at explaining things clearly and adapting to different learners.
What I especially like about her is that she doesn’t make learning Chinese feel too rigid or textbook-based. She can explain the language together with Chinese culture, history, food and everyday life, which makes the lessons much more interesting and easier to remember.
She is also very supportive and approachable, and I think she would be especially good for beginners, younger learners, or anyone who wants a more personalised way of learning Chinese.
I would definitely recommend her to anyone looking for a friendly, knowledgeable and conscientious Chinese tutor.View more recommendations
