About Karl
I enjoy teaching because I know how much difference it can make when a difficult concept is explained in a way that finally clicks.
Having spent several years working in chemistry research, I've learnt that understanding why something happens is far more useful than simply knowing the right answer. That's something I try to pass on to my students. I want them to develop the confidence to reason through unfamiliar problems rather than feeling like they have to memorise everything they might encounter in an exam.
I've been tutoring for over six years and have also taught undergraduate students during my PhD. One of the most rewarding parts of teaching for me is seeing a student go from being intimidated by a subject to realising that they're actually capable of understanding it.
Science can be challenging, but I don't think it needs to feel inaccessible. My goal is to make it feel manageable, interesting and, hopefully, something you can actually enjoy learning.

I will structure lesson plans around your syllabus to provide a tailored learning experience.
I take the same approach to teaching as I do to my own research: understanding the problem comes before trying to find the answer.
I focus on helping students genuinely understand concepts rather than simply memorising answers to common questions. This means that when an unfamiliar question appears in an exam, you have the understanding and confidence to work through it rather than being caught off guard!
Lessons will typically include a longer teaching element, broken up by exam-style questions that we will work through together. I'll guide you through the reasoning behind each answer and, as your understanding develops, encourage you to tackle problems more independently.
I have taught students ranging from KS3 through to first-year undergraduate level, with most of my tutoring experience at GCSE and A-Level.
