About Reed
Hello! I'm Reed. I've played chess over a decade, learning the rules at 5 years old, and playing all through elementary school and middle school. In college, I joined Portland State University's Collegiate Chess League, and after graduation I continued my journey as chess player and instructor by teaching for Rose City Chess.
In my free time, I play chess both casually and competitively, while also teaching kids to play. I usually work with students aged 5-11, but also teach adult beginners. My Chess.com rating is 1500, and my Lichess rating is 1750--and I'm always working on my skills!

I teach absolute beginners through 650 USCF rating (or 800 Rapid on Chess.com). I'm happy to teach you the rules.
My teaching approach is tailored to meet the specific needs of each player. Emphasizing individualized instruction combined with practice games to enhance learning and skill development.
We will begin by playing a casual game where I can gauge your current level and learn what areas could use improvement. In future lesson's we will play practice games where we explain our thinking behind each move. This will allow me to understand your thought process and provide real-time feedback. We will also analyze your games, discussing critical moves, tactical opportunities, and strategic adjustments.
