• When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

  My interest in civil and structural engineering began during my high school years when I was fascinated by the design and construction of infrastructure. This passion led me to pursue an academic and professional career in the field. My involvement in private tutoring started during my postgraduate studies, where I found great satisfaction in mentoring students and helping them grasp complex engineering concepts.

• Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

  I specialize in civil and structural engineering, with a strong focus on concrete materials, structural analysis, and construction methodologies. I particularly enjoy discussing practical applications of engineering principles and innovative solutions in construction. While I value all aspects of my subject, administrative tasks related to academia, such as extensive paperwork, are less engaging to me compared to hands-on teaching and mentoring.

• Did you have any role models, a teacher that inspired you?

  Yes, I was fortunate to have inspiring mentors throughout my academic journey. One of my professors, who demonstrated exceptional dedication to research and teaching, greatly influenced my approach to both learning and mentoring. Their ability to simplify complex concepts and inspire curiosity in students has been a guiding principle in my teaching philosophy.

• What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

  A good tutor must possess strong subject knowledge, excellent communication skills, and the ability to adapt to different learning styles. Patience, empathy, and a passion for teaching are also essential. Most importantly, a tutor should inspire students to think critically and develop problem-solving skills that extend beyond the classroom.

• Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

  During my postgraduate studies, I mentored a student who struggled with structural analysis. Through tailored explanations and practical examples, I helped them develop confidence in the subject. Later, they excelled in their exams and pursued a successful career in engineering. This experience reinforced my belief in the transformative power of education and mentorship.

• What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

  One of the key challenges in civil and structural engineering is keeping up with evolving construction technologies and industry standards. Additionally, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application can be challenging for students, which is why I emphasize real-world case studies in my teaching.

• Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general, an element of the subject or something completely different?

  In addition to my passion for civil and structural engineering, I am deeply committed to education and mentorship. I find great fulfillment in guiding students and young professionals and helping them navigate their academic and career paths. I also take an active interest in community service, particularly in my role as a Justice of the Peace.
