About Poppy

I started playing music at age five when I took up the piano. Four years later at age nine, I had my first harp lesson, and now play the harp for weddings and other events. I have had singing lessons for seven years, and am trained in both classical and musical theatre singing. Last year I started playing the saxophone and recently started learning the cello. I am currently training at Mountview Academy, and so I like to bring all the skills I have developed to a lesson, and will help students that suffer from stage fright, and teach everyone performance techniques to make them stand out, as good stage presence is the thing that makes a good musician/ singer great.

I have a very bubbly personality and believe that music should be something you enjoy, so I will always push you to find things that interest you and that you want to play. As someone who was diagnosed with ADHD only a few years ago, I found that playing music and singing is such a good way to sort out your thoughts, and boost your mood, and so I want to give everyone that skill who wants it.

I strive to bring something fun to every lesson, but if you would prefer to just knuckle down and focus on something in particular, I will help you break it down, find an organised way to practice it, and get you started on the right path. I believe lessons should be in the hands of the students, and will never dictate what path someone should take on their musical journey, however, I will always push my students to do the best that they can, but not to the detriment of any other activities they may do.

I enjoy teaching a lot, and find it inspiring to pass on something that has given me so much joy to others that are willing to learn.

Singing:

I have been trained by expert vocalists, both in the UK and from the States, and it is now part of my degree course. My approach to singing is predominately practical based, and focuses less on the book learning and the theory of singing. This is because I believe the most effective way to learn is by feeling what is safe and correct, as opposed to learning the theory and then not being able to execute it safely. I will give people exercises to strengthen and enhance what is already in their voice, not turn their voice into something else. Vocal health and singing in a sustainable way is extremely important to me, and this will always be at the forefront of my mind during our lessons.

I can teach a wide range of styles, but will focus predominantly on classical and musical theatre styles. My training enables me to put you through musical theatre exams as I can also coach on acting and dance. I will also teach the classical syllabus to those who want to.

My lessons will be mainly about the singing, but I believe that you cannot have singing without acting, and so I will start to guide you in various acting techniques, and how to safely use your voice to express emotion.

I have a lot of audition experience, and am a post Grade 8 pianist, so I can help prepare for any auditions, and roles you may be playing.

Music Theory:

I have a wide knowledge of music theory, and passed my Grade 5 many years ago. I will start at the basics and teach people ways to remember things such as key signatures and note reading. I spend a lot of time arranging music and so I have a basic understanding of all instruments. I regularly teach music theory to my course mates, as I have found ways to explain the complicated nature of it in simple terms, and have developed many tricks over the years I would be happy to share.

Qualifications:

Piano- Post Grade 8
Harp- Post Grade 8
Classical Singing- Post Grade 8
Musical Theatre- Post Grade 8

Lesson Lengths:

All lessons can be either half an hour, forty five minutes or an hour. I am very flexible and so if there is need to extend the lesson I can do so in advance. I do however recommend that students below the age of 11 only take half an hour classes, as I have noticed that this is the amount of time students of that age generally focus for.
