About Liam
I have a Bachelor's from the Royal Northern College of Music in the UK, and have studied mainly under Craig Ogden and Ricardo Cobo. My biggest accomplishment so far is probably winning 3rd place at the Houston Classical Guitar Festival and Competition, College Division. Although my career is in its very early stages, I've performed at a couple different venues in the UK and US, and have competed in several competitions throughout Europe and the US. I also have a YouTube Channel by the name of Liam Kalson.

I started playing at thirteen under the instruction of a great teacher. This teacher showed me right away that practicing is not about playing exercises all day for years, but rather getting right to the meat and potatoes, and playing real pieces quickly. Nothing is more motivating than finding out you can play real pieces that you've always wanted to. While I obviously learned to read sheet music and play scales, I was also taught pieces visually, while I could barely learn by reading. It turns out, the human brain is capable of subconsciously processing many things at once. I'm not a cognitive scientist, but I believe that subject is very interesting and helpful regarding learning any subject like playing an instrument, and there are many advantages to understanding working vs. long-term memory, etc. Eventually, it is of course important to develop all the other skills such as sight-reading and fingerboard proficiency. A teacher should hold their students accountable and make sure they implement a good schedule to build these tools.
Considering my background, I'm more than happy to help guide students at any point throughout their journey, whether that person is looking towards music as a hobby and can commit to 30 minutes a day, or is an undergraduate with professional aspirations.
