About Auriel

I am a recent graduate from the College of Charleston, where I received my Artium Bacclaureus degree in Molecular Biology. This involved completing not only course-work required for a Bachelor's in Biology, but also extra studies in the Latin language, as well as Roman and Greek culture in antiquity. I also had a minor in Crime, Law, and Society. That sounds like a lot, but I'm really just a curious person and I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I kept things simple all the time (which of course comes back to bite me on occasion). I enjoy learning about many things and sharing what I've discovered. I spend a lot of time doing research and reading articles, and I also enjoy chess. I have struggled with course-work too, and I want my students to know that it's normal and they are not alone.

About the lesson

I enjoy working one to one with students most but I also have experience working with large groups of over 20 students. I like to create a calm and friendly environment where the student can feel comfortable enough to ask any and all questions that they may have. Using notes and homework assignments, I create games or puzzles for students to work on, since it's usually easier to remember something if it was fun. Creating acronyms and finding short-cuts to memorize information is another useful trait I like to pass on to my students, as well as use of the process of elimination. It is important to give students various angles from which to view their subject material. Also, it is good to get an idea of how the student studies and how often.

Typically I start with a quick warm-up of the student's general upcoming quiz/test material (short quiz, a game, video). We would go over this and I might ask the student to explain their reasoning for picking an answer. After this, we could go over test questions, homework assignments, or challenging areas of lecture material in the form of questions, or a game. My favorite way to knowledge check after a session is having a student explain a topic to me or a peer, or, having them make their own questions.

I have experience working with high school students in various fields within Science (General Biology, Molecular Biology, Ecology, Anatomy/Physiology, Chemistry). I have experience working with college students specifically in Intro to Molecular Biology I, and Intro to Molecular Biology 2.

Overall, I adapt to the student's pace and try my best to help them succeed.
