Hi, I’m Kayla!

I’m an earth and ocean scientist with a B.S. in Earth Sciences and an M.S. in Oceanography from the University of New Hampshire (4.0 GPA in my master’s), and I’ve done doctoral research in earth and environmental sciences at Columbia University. I’ve spent years in labs, on research projects, and in classrooms, and I love helping students see that science is something you can figure out, not just memorize.

My teaching method and techniques:

I teach by connecting ideas to real examples, like how a coral skeleton records past ocean temperatures or why a river delta forms where it does. I start by finding out what a student already understands, then build from there. I explain concepts in more than one way (words, diagrams, examples, quick practice problems) until one clicks. I also like to leave students able to solve problems on their own, not just follow my steps.

A typical lesson:
- Check-in (5 to 10 minutes): go over what’s due, what’s confusing, and what we’re aiming for.
- Concept work (20 to 30 minutes): we work through the topic together with examples, sketches, and questions.
- Practice (15 to 20 minutes): the student tries problems or writing, and I give feedback as they go.
- Wrap-up (5 minutes): we recap and set a small goal for next time.

For writing help, we outline, draft, and revise together, so you leave with a stronger paper and a clearer process.

What sets me apart:

I’ve taught at both the lab and lecture level. I led undergraduate Earth science lab sessions at UNH and was a Teaching Assistant for Climate Systems at Columbia. I’ve also led hands-on marine science programs for kids and families and mentor students through a STEM pen pal program, so I’m comfortable teaching a wide range of ages and confidence levels. My research background in coral and sediment analysis means I can explain how scientists actually collect and interpret data. I’ve also done wildlife rehabilitation work, which tends to be a hit with students who love animals and the outdoors. And as a scientific writer, I can help with lab reports, research papers, and essays.

Who my lessons are for:

- Middle school and high school students in earth science, environmental science, and general science
- High school students in AP or honors environmental science, and students who want to strengthen their lab report and science writing skills
- College students in introductory earth science, oceanography, climate, and environmental science courses
- College and graduate students who need help with scientific writing, literature reviews, or reading research papers
- Students of any age who feel anxious about science or have been told they’re “not a science person.” I’m patient, and I love working with beginners.

I’m happy to start with a short first session so we can see if it’s a good fit.
