About Joseph

I am a self taught Japanese speaker with a passion for culture, language, and travel. I taught ESL in China for two years where I was extremely fortunate to visit Tokyo. My use and understanding of the Japanese language allowed me to interact with the people there and allowed me to experience Tokyo in a much more convenient way than not knowing any Japanese. My goal is to use my passion and experiences speaking, traveling, and learning about new cultures to help connect my students to the wonderful world of Japanese.

Typical Lesson Plan

Get to know student's hobbies and interests to get an idea of how to introduce certain content, how to engage with the student.
Refresh on Prior Knowledge
If a student has certain knowledge already, I will adjust to their level of understanding, and introduce new concepts at appropriate level.
If a student does not have prior knowledge, I will start with the basics from the beginning of language level.

For all levels of Japanese I focus on:
Reading + writing (hiragana, Katakana, beginner/elementary)
(Kanji, From elementary to intermediate)

Because Japanese is a highly iconographic language I will be teaching instruction in how to properly write hiragana, katakana, and kanji. For the Kanji I focus majorly on stroke order and radical identification. This will be the bulk of the reading and writing in these sessions. I will also have the student read additional passages to practice what we have learned all in one place.

In terms of speaking I will teach the student pronunciation and phonics of Japanese. Once we master simpler words, new vocabulary will be learned and built on, and we will also use situational conversations to practice speaking and listening skills. This will also help to improve reading skills.

In terms of grammar, I will focus on particles, articles, and other aspects of Japanese grammar. I will either create exercises for the student or will assign a textbook and use the exercises there for grammar practice. I may also use some reading/ response activities as well for both verbal communication and grammar comprehension.

I am open to different usage of media as well so videos, TV shows, songs, etc.. can be used for students who might prefer to learn in a more unorthodox way.
