About John
Up until a few years ago, I was a nervous pre-medical student taking on one of the biggest challenges of my life: the MCAT exam. Now, I am a current medical student who just successfully finished my second year and passed STEP1 on my first attempt. In between that time was a number of lessons I learned for myself and applied consistently in my studies which made my learning not only an efficient process, but also a fun one.
The way that I teach is informed by techniques that have been proven to work for medical students, as well as for myself who does not come from a traditional science background. I was a psychology major in undergrad and am also pursuing a Master's in Medical Ethics & Humanities at the moment, so I have a mix of both natural science and humanities-focused education. This is precisely where medical education is moving towards at the moment and the mastery that the MCAT exam will require from its test-takers.
I have a variety of experiences working with people ranging from giving music lessons to being a Barista and manager at a coffee shop. There have been times where I have had to find creative solutions to problems, as well as those in which I have had to pivot and adapt when things weren't working as planned. I know when to speak and when to listen, and appreciate a collaborative approach when it comes to learning. As someone who understands the journey, I will be both your tutor and your coach so that you can stay strong and motivated throughout the demanding period of MCAT preparation.

I’m a strong believer in that if you want to learn well, you need to make your learning efficient. As your tutor, that is something that I can help you do during your MCAT prep. My time in medical school is especially limited because I am consecutively pursuing a master’s degree and engaging in research projects. So, I created a system for myself that incorporated spaced repetition through programs such as Anki, regular self-assessments through platforms such as UWorld, and the use of AI to create customized review sessions that were tailored to my own progression. The result? I am able to consistently perform above average in medical school AND passed STEP1 on my first try.
Strong first-pass learning, self-assessments, and tailored reviews with spaced repetition are the techniques at the core of my teaching. During a lesson with me, we will start with a passage that you wish to go over together, or one that I generate, to assess your current level of understanding. I will identify a few key points to focus on during the lesson that need improvement. We will spend the lesson going over those key points and strengthen your understanding by going back to the initial passage or questions. Finally, I will help you generate a review plan that will strengthen those points until the next lesson. If you are having trouble remembering material, I can also show you how to use programs such as Anki efficiently to aid in your spaced repetition.
These lessons are for any pre-medical undergraduate student who wants to make the most out of their limited time to perform successfully on the MCAT exam. My goal is not only to teach you how to be successful on the MCAT, but also to teach you to be an efficient learner so that you can go on to be successful in other academically demanding environments such as medical school.
