About Wren

I am a Biology tutor with 6 years of experience and a BSc in Molecular Biology. I have taught over 220 students across all major examination boards at GCSE and A-Level, with additional experience supporting first-year university students. My molecular biology specialism means I am particularly strong on the genetic, cellular, and biochemical content that students often find most challenging, and I bring a genuine scientist's perspective to how biological knowledge is built and tested. About the lesson

My Biology teaching treats quantitative skills as integral to biological understanding rather than as an optional extra, which means my students are specifically prepared for the data analysis, statistical reasoning, and mathematical biology that characterises modern biological science and advanced examination papers. I introduce students to the practice of active recall from the very first lesson, replacing passive re-reading of notes with self-testing and spaced retrieval, because the research evidence that this produces more durable learning than any other study technique is overwhelming and the difference in outcome is dramatic. My approach to ecology specifically uses real ecosystems — specific British woodlands, named reef systems, particular endangered populations — rather than generic unnamed examples, because specificity makes ecological concepts memorable and gives students the case study knowledge that examination extended response questions reward. Human physiology in my teaching is approached through clinical cases where possible, asking students to reason from symptoms to diagnosis to mechanism, because this diagnostic approach develops exactly the integrative biological thinking that most challenges students at the boundary between understanding and application. I address the vocabulary load of Biology directly and systematically, because the sheer number of technical terms is one of the genuine learning challenges of the subject and students benefit from explicit vocabulary building strategies. My teaching goal is a student who can engage with genuinely novel biological scenarios and reason their way to a well-supported answer.
