¿Qué significa ser bilingüe?
Muchas veces se piensa que si se aprende un segundo idioma, uno se convierte en bilingüe, pero no siempre esto es así. Gustavo Pérez Firmat señala que el verdadero bilingüe "no es alguien quien posee competencia nativa en dos lenguas, sino aquel que está igualmente ligado a ambas" (traducción personal de Tongue Ties4).
La realidad es que solamente cuando se aprende un idioma distinto al materno en un entorno cuyo el idioma preponderante no es este, se puede lograr competencia a un grado semejante a los oriundos, especialmente si se esto se logra antes de la adolescencia.
