About Daniel

I came to music properly as an adult, after years of assuming singing just wasn't something people like me got to do. Nine years and about one hundred fifty students later, that assumption looks pretty silly in hindsight, and I try to be living proof to every new student that starting late isn't a disadvantage. Before teaching, I spent a long stretch working an unrelated day job, squeezing in singing lessons on evenings and weekends, so I genuinely understand the juggling act many of my adult students are dealing with. I never trained at a conservatory and I'm upfront about that, because I think it actually helps me relate to beginners who feel intimidated walking in the door. My own teacher was endlessly patient with me, and I try to pay that forward every single lesson, especially with nervous adults who think they've "missed their window." Most of my students are grown-ups rebuilding confidence they lost somewhere along the way, though I happily work with teenagers too. I keep things relaxed, a little funny sometimes, and genuinely judgment-free, because that's exactly what I needed when I started. If you think you're too old or too far behind, you're probably exactly the student I love working with most.

About the lesson

Honestly I don't teach the way I was taught because I wasn't really taught at all — I picked up singing late, in my thirties, mostly out of stubbornness after being told I "wasn't a singer." So my first job with any new student is just getting them to make an actual sound without cringing, because that was the hardest part for me too. We start with silly, low-stakes exercises, sliding and humming, nothing that sounds like "real singing" yet, until the fear drains out of the room a bit. Once a student can make noise without flinching, we work on breath the practical way, not with fancy terminology but with simple physical cues that actually made sense to me as a late starter. I teach pitch through repetition and patience rather than lecturing about theory, because I remember how useless that felt before my ear was trained. Songs come early, usually something the student already hums in the shower, because progress on something you love sticks better than progress on an exercise you tolerate. I check in constantly about how lessons feel, not just how they sound, and I never rush anyone toward a "big note" before they're ready. Slow and steady genuinely works, I'm proof of it.
