A native of Colombia, I have been living in Australia for nearly 16 years. Essential steps for teaching Spanish—Initial assessment: Identify the student's proficiency level (A1 to C1) and personal goals (travel, work, or cultural interest) to tailor the lessons.
Practical approach: Prioritize the simple present tense at basic levels so the student can start communicating quickly without becoming overwhelmed by complex verb tenses.
Speak primarily in Spanish from the start, using mime, gestures, and visual slides instead of translating everything into English or the student's native language.
Environment of trust: Create a relaxed atmosphere to reduce student stress and provide motivation by celebrating every small step of progress.
