About Jia Hang

I'm the kind of person who can listen to a song and play it straight away—without needing any sheet music. People often ask me, “Did your diploma teach you that? How can you play music without reading scores?” This is a common misconception: that classical piano skills automatically translate into modern pop piano playing. But that's simply not true. My answer is always the same—it’s my passion for music that allows me to do this. Like everyone else, I listen to songs—a lot of songs. My playlist includes rap, pop, indie, jazz, rock, Chinese ballads, Korean OSTs, classical pieces, and more. Honestly, I believe your musicality matters more than just technical skills. While working at a music center, I noticed many teachers still use outdated, classical-focused teaching methods—even when teaching pop songs. These methods often don’t work, leaving students frustrated, uninterested, and stuck without progress. That’s why I’m committed to changing that. I want to help students who are genuinely interested in modern piano playing develop the skills and confidence to play the songs they love—freely and expressively.

About the lesson

Do you ever wonder how some people can play songs or improvise just by listening—without needing sheet music? Are you tired of following music sheets that don’t truly capture the emotion you feel for a song?

Instead of molding every student into a traditional classical pianist focused solely on technicalities like dynamics, articulation, and tempo, my teaching approach is different. My goal is to help students develop the skills to express their own unique emotions through music.

Not everyone wants to be the next Mozart—and that’s okay. I believe most people learn piano to play songs they love, for themselves or the people around them. Although I come from a classical background, my passion lies in pop music. With practical experience as a church pianist and school musician, I’ve learned how to go beyond the boundaries of conventional piano training. I hold a ABRSM diploma in piano performance and finished all student grade in Yamaha's piano syllabus, run a music account dedicated to covers (concealed information) and have written several original songs for my school (check out @hhhs_senior3)

My lessons are designed for beginners to amateurs, ideally aged 13 and above. Before we begin, the most important thing I do is ask: What’s your ultimate goal with piano? Is it to play your favorite songs? To learn to improvise and play freely? Based on your answer, I’ll create a personalised teaching plan that fits your needs.

Each lesson lasts 45 minutes.
