About Lachie
I am a graduate of law, history and music who wants to connect with students and reconnect with my own musical background. I studied classical piano all through high school and into university, becoming qualified with a Diploma from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music.
While I enjoyed my experience, I did not always agree with my teachers' methods, and would like to try some of my own teaching strategies. I love classical piano, and with my background in history, I will try to connect my students with the emotional context of the music they learn.

My method aims to keep learning fresh and engaging, rather than monotonous. Classical music tends to be taught in a rigid way, making practice a daily chore with a mechanical outcome. In my mind, it is much more effective to practice in short bursts, meeting mini-goals, and focusing on enjoyment and achievement. I would rather that every minute of practice is engaging, rewarding, and leads to progress.
In my classroom, lessons will start with a recap and recital of last week's learning, which is essential to memory retention. When tackling new passages, we will look at the most challenging aspects first, and come up with methods to overcome them, aiming for simplicity. The music chosen will be based on the student's own preference, then ability level, style, and equipment. I will help students with mental techniques to overcome performance anxiety and enter a state of flow. Finally, I will describe the background of the composer and what he or she was trying to achieve, encouraging students to provide their own interpretation and leave their own mark.
