About Kieran
I have loved mathematics for as long as I can remember. I have been fortunate enough to be able to pursue this passion across three different countries, learning from a multitude of incredible minds and diverse perspectives.
My academic journey started at the University of Pretoria in South Africa, where I received my BSc in Physics and my BSc(Hons) in Mathematics. I followed this up with my MSc in Mathematics from Utrecht University in the Netherlands. Finally, I then pursued my PhD at the University of Kent, specialising in an area at the interface between functional analysis, topology, and geometry.
For as long as I have enjoyed learning about mathematics, I have loved sharing my passion for mathematics with others. I have been teaching maths in various forms for well over a decade-- whether it be helping my little cousins understand fractions when I was 17, or giving seminar talks to my fellow PhD students on ergodic theory.
My formal teaching experience spans 14 years across various institutions and levels. I have served as an assistant lecturer/tutorial leader at all 3 institutions, where I have taught a multitude of different undergraduate courses, including calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, real analysis, and stochastic processes.
During my time at Utrecht University, I completed a specialised module focused on designing effective tutorial sessions, which enhanced my ability to create engaging and productive learning environments.
At the University of Kent I led Royal Institution Mathematics Masterclasses as part of a programme to get young people thinking about how mathematics profoundly influences the world around us. I also served on the Outreach team as an Academic Mentor for A-Level Mathematics, and this experience gave me valuable insight into teaching mathematics to students from diverse academic backgrounds.
Throughout my academic journey, I've maintained an active private tutoring practice, working with students from secondary school through university level. I've helped students master topics ranging from GCSE and A-Level mathematics and physics through to university-level Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Analysis. This one-on-one experience has been particularly valuable in developing my ability to identify and address individual learning needs.

Mathematics is best learnt through doing, and my teaching combines rigorous explanations of mathematical concepts combined with working through illuminating problems together to help students truly get a feel for the mathematical objects they are studying, all the while building confidence.
I firmly believe that anyone can excel at mathematics with the right support. Mathematical ideas build upon each other in essential ways, meaning that missing just one concept can have significant downstream consequences. When students tell me "I just don't get it, I'm bad at mathematics," it nearly always just means that they've been let down in the past.
This belief underlies my teaching philosophy. When a student encounters a difficulty, we work backwards through their mathematical journey to identify and correct these gaps in understanding. Mathematics is not supposed to be a black box, and with the right help, anyone can see inside it and achieve the tangible results they want in their courses.
Whether you're preparing for A-levels or are a new post-grad delving into more advanced topics like functional analysis or stochastic processes, I will design a lesson plan tailored for your specific needs and learning preferences.

My rate includes all preparation for A-level courses and 1st year university courses. I may require additional preparation time for more advanced courses if taken at an institution I am not familiar with to ensure the best learning experience. This varies depending on the course, and will be discussed in advance.
