About Jessica

I am a tutor based in Queens, NY with more than ten years of experience teaching, tutoring, and mentoring students. I am currently a doctoral candidate in education at Teachers College, Columbia University, and I hold a Master of Science in Kinesiology from California State University, East Bay, and a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Biology from the University of California, Davis.

My experience spans elementary through high school and into college preparation. I have tutored one on one and in small groups in mathematics through Geometry, biology, chemistry, and English for English language learners, and I have supported SAT and TOEFL preparation. I have worked in classroom settings supporting recent immigrant and English language learner students, co-taught after-school programs for young children, mentored an eleventh grade student week to week, and lectured undergraduate seminars.

My approach is not about having students memorize and solve problems in isolation. Instead, I help them see the bigger picture of a concept and then break it down layer by layer so they build real understanding and learn how each idea connects to the next. I pay close attention to each student's level and pace, design lessons that fit them, and work to encourage students emotionally so they grow in confidence and rediscover the fun of learning.

About the lesson

My teaching approach is student-centered, structured, and encouraging. I begin by identifying each student’s goals, strengths, and areas of difficulty, then tailor lessons accordingly.

Each lesson begins with a brief review of previous material or homework questions. I then introduce new concepts step-by-step, connecting them to what the student already knows.

As an EdD student in Education, I combine strong subject knowledge with evidence-based teaching practices. I focus not only on what to learn, but how to learn—helping students build effective study habits, problem-solving strategies, and confidence.

I work with middle school, high school, and college-level students, including those preparing for exams, improving foundational skills, or taking advanced courses. Subjects include mathematics, science, quantitative methods, and college preparation.

I also support students in education, social sciences, and related fields who need help with statistics or quantitative coursework. Lessons are fully online and adapted to each student’s level and learning style.
