About Gordon

I love to help people which is why I joined the field of TESOL(Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). I love seeing others succeed in life, and I want to be a part of their journeys.

For that purpose, I received a BA in TESOL Education and a TESOL certificate. I am currently teaching several academic English classes at Brigham Young University - Hawaii. I've over six years of experience teaching and tutoring all skill areas, namely speaking, listening, reading, and writing. My favorite part of teaching or tutoring students is being able to explain a principle of grammar or how to structure a paper and seeing my students' faces light up with understanding for the first time.

One reason I love teaching at BYU-Hawaii is that it has shown me the value of various accents, cultures, and ideas. Each time starting a new semester, I get to meet thousands of students from all over the world, and I absolutely enjoy it!

About the lesson

You will probably wonder why you should choose someone like me, a non-native English speaker, to teach you English. I have several answers to this:
1. Being a native speaker of a language does not qualify anyone to be a teacher of that language.
2. I started teaching English in 2016 and have experience teaching English to a variety of learners, such as Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Filipinos, Mongolians, Thais, Indonesians, etc.
3. I am an adjunct faculty teaching multiple intensive English classes at Brigham Young University - Hawaii.
4. I grew up learning and speaking three languages: English, Cantonese, and Chinese Mandarin. What does it mean? It means I understand your struggles, challenges, and needs when learning a second language.

My classes are useful and will always tailor to your needs. I can teach English ranging from general to academic, depending on what you want. I enjoy helping students improve their academic writing skills, so please let me know if you need help with an academic essay!

Last but not least, don't be afraid to make mistakes. In my tutoring sessions, I also aim to help you learn to embrace mistakes. English is not just a language but also a skill; in other words, it takes time and consistent effort to learn.
