About John
I moved to Manchester from Glasgow to study at the RNCM, where I gained my B.A. in Guitar performance. It was an amazing experience that I learnt a lot from, which I love sharing with students.
I gig professionally 3-4 times a week, performing regularly with Honeyfeet and other original projects. I am also a session musician, working professionally each week in Manchester playing soul, pop, rock + jazz.
I regularly perform experimental looping sets. I also started and run a monthly original music event called BRUME, which has run over 120 times.
For the past 5 years I have also worked as a music facilitator, running workshops for Mens Music for Mental Health, children in the justice system and band workshops for teenagers. This has given me a unique outlook on helping people who may struggle, in one way or another, and to use music to talk about this.

I always start by teaching the music you love, explaining how it works and how to play it.
I have been a private guitar teacher for 19 years, and have loved helping Beginners to University Students learn something new and play things they never thought they could, some examples are...
- Preparing Students for Conservatoire Auditions
- Learning Barre chords, even if they feel impossible!
- Working on New Techniques (Sweep Picking, Tapping etc)
- Starting to Improvise
- Writing and Recording Your Own Songs
- Advanced looping + Effects Approaches (Pedals or Ableton)
- Scales, Chords, Theory,
- Analysing Jazz standards + Improvising
What motivates me is what a student really cares about, and helping them get there. I believe in making lessons as fun and as interesting as possible, with as much playing together as we can.
I have an online teaching setup, but can also teach from my home in M32 or my studio in Ancoats. I can travel within 5km. I am happy to do a 30 min taster lesson, just get in touch!

John is my guitar teacher. Since learning with John, he has really expanded my knowledge of the guitar and really helped me in areas of learning that I have struggled to understand.
John is an excellent tutor, with a wealth of experience both teaching and working in the music industry as a performer and an event organiser. He is incredibly adept at working with students of all levels of knowledge, tailoring his lessons to best support your learning goals, and in a way that encourages steady improvement without feeling overwhelmed. I have had virtual lessons from John as well as in-person, and both have felt like a positive learning experience and gave me a new way of thinking about playing the guitar, despite having 20 years of experience with the instrument.
John is a fantastic guitar teacher — friendly, very patient and extremely knowledgeable. He explains things in a clear and straightforward way and makes lessons enjoyable and easy to follow. He’s encouraging without being overwhelming, and I’d definitely recommend him to anyone looking to learn or improve their guitar playing.
I have worked with John both as a performer at gigs around Manchester and the north west and a teacher in my capacity as Programmes Manager at a music charity in central Manchester. He has covered our one to one guitar teaching sessions, as well as our Parents' Orchestra, dealing with many musicians of different disciplines and ability levels.
As a performer, he is technically excellent, with a fantastic ear and great attention to detail when both learning and composing.
When teaching, John has a fantastic, organic style. He prioritises playing above almost any other teacher I've seen, ensuring that the majority of the lesson is involved playing, with technical terminology coming as an explanation after the student has already experienced them musically. His manner with students is kind and patient, and he is clearly interested in their personal stories as well as their technical expertise.
I would heartily recommend John as a performer and a teacher.John is not only a brilliant guitar player, but he's an excellent teacher. He's so patient and really takes the time to work with you one on one and teach you songs you actually want to learn! He helped me finally get to grips with barre chords, which I'd been struggling with for ages. More importantly, he's super chill and really easy to get on with, which makes lessons feel relaxed. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking to learn how to play! He's fabulous!
John used to teach me guitar at college for 2 years, and he helped me make substantial improvements in my playing. He listened to everything I wanted and facilitated it. He always explained things in the exact way I needed and would change the approach to suit my needs! Would highly recommend him for a guitarist of any level.
