My philosophy for teaching saxophone is grounded in the belief that musicianship grows at the intersection of disciplined practice and creative exploration. Working with students anywhere from first-timers to seasoned players, I tailor lessons to each individual's aspirations—whether that’s joining a jazz ensemble, performing in recitals, prepping for auditions, or crafting original music. We start by reinforcing essential technical skills: controlled breath support, focused embouchure, smooth finger transitions, tone consistency, precise articulation, and accurate intonation. To nurture musical curiosity, I integrate improvisation early on using guided call-and-response exercises, melodic interpretation, and creative phrasing drills that cultivate students’ musical instincts. Music theory is seamlessly embedded into practical musicianship—students connect scales, rhythms, and harmonic concepts while learning real songs or improvising over chord changes. Repertoire is selected to reflect each student’s interests—from jazz standards and blues classics to pop hits, movie themes, or classical pieces—keeping lessons fresh, inspiring, and relevant. We set collaborative goals, from mastering challenging passages and building performance routines to completing composition or improvisation projects. A standout moment in my teaching was witnessing a shy student step onto a stage as a soloist in her school band, performing with poise and presence after months of measured confidence-building. Experiences like these affirm my belief in the importance of cultivating a teaching environment that values both technical precision and emotional growth. Ultimately, I guide students to become saxophonists who are not only skilled and knowledgeable but also creatively expressive and musically empowered.

About the lesson

In my saxophone studio, I strive to create a space where students feel empowered to take ownership of their musical journey. I believe that learning an instrument is not just about acquiring technical skills but also about developing a deeper understanding of oneself and the world around us.

I encourage students to think beyond the notes on the page, to interpret the music with their own voice, and to connect emotionally with the repertoire. I incorporate a variety of musical styles into lessons, from classical etudes to contemporary pop songs, to expose students to different musical traditions and to keep lessons engaging. For students interested in improvisation, I provide a structured approach that includes ear training, scale practice, and improvisation exercises.

I believe that improvisation is a powerful tool for developing creativity and musical expression. Technology is a valuable asset in my teaching. I use recording devices to allow students to listen back to their performances, helping them identify areas for improvement and track their progress over time.
