Firstly i explain the need of that particular topic that why students need to learn it, then i start by reading it for them(science) or solving an example first (maths) using ample amount of time.Then I ask them to solve it or tell me what they understood and according to their understanding i repeat it as many times they need in order to get it perfectly.
