Upon engaging with a new client, I suggest they provide me with a short essay or write up regarding their area of study, whether that be a book report, or a more general report on a period of English (Romanticism , postmodernism, Victorian, or something within the English Curriculum depending on your year of study). Its nothing serious, but serves to give me a clear indication of their knowledge of the subject so I can teach according to their areas of weakness, and consolidate their strengths. No client is the same, so it would be redundant to provide the same approach. Taking the into consideration, communication is important. I need to be informed. Sharing past work with me will also provide me with information about the direction of our lessons, it is important they are beneficial and I aren't teaching things the student already knows. If there is something specific you are studying regarding literature, good communication will allow me to prepare the best lessons possible and give me time to analyse any resources myself. This works best for student and teacher allowing us to be on the same page (pardon the pun) when it comes to our lessons.
