About Susanne

Hello! I'm a 5th-generation San Diegan with quite a family history here. Reading has been my major interest since age 4; I read every book of interest in my elementary school's library by the end of third grade. Fortunately, my mom took our family to the library every second Tuesday, and I always checked out a leaning tower of books each time. My passion for poetry started during my sophomore year of high school when our English teacher recited loooooong poems from memory. His eyes closed, he'd lean back in his desk chair and recite poems to us. And as I heard poetry for the first time (rather than reading it to myself), I fell face-first in love with poetry ... and I am still a lover of poetry, composing a poem now and then. Then my love for Shakespeare developed with an entire semester of his poems and plays during my senior year. Even now, I attend Shakespeare plays as often as I can afford. Every weekend, I play Dungeons & Dragons with two of my four grown kids and some former neighbors and their friends; we're heading toward Level 17 (out of 20) after 5+ years of playing the same DnD campaign. I am relearning German, perfecting my calligraphy style, and journaling obsessively (usually with a fountain pen). I continue to lead a writer's workshop at a local library (where I still check out far too many books!).

About the lesson

Teaching individuals or small groups is my preferred mode of teaching. I feel most comfortable tutoring language arts from junior high through undergraduate university. I have taught junior high and high school writing and literature classes at a local private school, plus literature and writing at Point Loma Nazarene University. In addition, I homeschooled my four kids K-12 through a local private school in all subjects except math and high school science. Currently, I also teach asynchronous online language arts courses, two of which I will describe below: For example, I have taught online Shakespeare classes to high school students for the past 15+ years. I have developed methods to bring Shakespeare's language to life using Barron's Shakespeare Made Easy or SparkNotes No Fear Shakespeare texts in addition to specific curated scenes from YouTube, such as Hamlet's famous "To be or not to be" soliloquy or the balcony scene from Romeo & Juliet. In addition, I have taught the MLA Research Essay format for the past 20 years, including the current 9th edition MLA format. I can walk students through the entire research process from choosing a topic, writing a hypothesis, locating and citing sources, planning/outlining the research, writing a first draft of the research essay (including Works Cited), and finalizing the research essay and the Works Cited. I receive many emails from former high school students who were the only students in their college writing classes who had previously researched and written an MLA essay.
