About Bradon
I am a classically trained violinist, and I have been playing folk fiddle for 30 years. I teach all levels from complete beginners to advanced players. I specialise in teaching fiddle in the Irish, Scottish, English and Scandinavian styles. I have studied Teaching Traditional Music and Song with Dr Liz Doherty, and am an accredited teacher by the Royal Irish Academy of Music. I am an experienced teacher - not just of music - and hold an internationally recognised fellowship from the Higher Education Academy in recognition of my teaching. I hold a PhD from the University of Cambridge, and have taught at the universities of Cambridge, Edinburgh, Bath and Bristol.

So you want to learn to play folk fiddle? Great! I specialise in teaching folk fiddle, in the Celtic (Irish and Scottish), English and Scandinavian styles. Whether you are a complete beginner, or already an advanced player, I can help you improve your technique, teach you about the subtleties of phrasing and ornamentation in fiddle playing, and build your repertoire of tunes. I can teach you to play 'by ear', but can also teach you to read music if you wish. I create a relaxed environment for learning, looking to build confidence and help my students to understand the 'feel' of traditional music that is so important to playing the fiddle. Every student is different, and I tailor all my lessons to the student. Maybe you have a specific style you want to learn, or a fiddle player you particularly like or a tune you want to learn - I can provide you with arrangements and tips on how to achieve your goals. ONLINE LESSONS Since the beginning of 2020, as well as in person lessons, I have been giving lessons online via video call. During the periods of lockdown during 2020 and 2021, all of my lessons moved online, and my students found this to be a very effective way of continuing to learn. I use two cameras: a wide shot to show students aspects of posture or bowing technique and for general conversation; and a second close-up camera over the fingerboard to show details of fingering. You won't miss a thing! I use a professional-level sound setup, with an electric pickup on the violin, along with a separate microphone for my voice, combined with a high speed internet connection -- so the sound quality is excellent.
Review
All of our reviews are collected by us and are 100% reliable. They correspond to a real experience had by the students of Bradon.
Perfect! Bradon is a great music tutor from my experience so far… I’ve only had a couple of lessons to date, but feel like I have learned loads in a very short space of time. In the first lesson Bradon spent time understanding what I wanted to learn, my current skill level, what direction I wanted to go in terms of music styles and so on… he then tailored the sessions around this. He’s clearly very a experienced fiddler and highly knowledgeable about folk traditions. He is very patient, positive and motivating in his approach. So far I’m very pleased with the lessons and looking forward to more! [review from my partner; got him some lessons as a gift!]
- Sonia's partner (the lesson was a gift) has taught himself some basic fiddle technique, but we reviewed how to hold the fiddle and the bow. We looked at getting a nice sound from a good bowing action, and then did some work on left hand intonation (tuning). We discussed how left -hand and -wrist position can affect the tuning. Then we learned the first part of well-known Irish jig 'by ear', phrase by phrase. Not bad for a first lesson! Well done!Bradon's response :
Perfect! Bradon is a patient and friendly tutor who has offered me clear and direct strategies to go about achieving the essence of the traditional fiddle sound. In particular I’ve enjoyed learning how to effectively articulate a tune and ornament it in a way that compliments its points of interest. It has been a pleasure to learn many wonderful new tunes from a deeply knowledgeable tutor who gives them context and makes them come alive.
- Catherine is already a good session player, with a good repertoire of tunes. Starting with a tune (a jig) which she already played, we worked through a range of new bowing techniques, melodic variations and ornaments, many of which were new to her - but she is quick to learn, and listens carefully to suggestions. We made rapid progress in the space of a single lesson. We then looked at a new tune (a reel) from sheet music, and talked about rhythmic structure and pulse, and the differences between related ornaments in Irish music. Catherine already has a solid technique, and I think with some guidance could quickly become a really good fiddle player.Bradon's response :
Perfect! Brandon was and excellent tutor and exactly what I needed after a having not played the violin for 17 years.
He was patient, insightful and comprehensive in his instruction taking into account my weak points and tailoring his tutoring to my needs.
The recordings he gave me afterwards are fantastic and have helped me on my homework.
I highly recommend Brandon and I am eagerly looking forward to continuing to learn with him!- An excellent first lesson with Ed. He hasn't played the violin for a long time, but we quickly took stock of where he was and reviewed some basic technique. We discussed a few useful exercises, and then learned a simple Irish jig by ear, phrase by phrase. Finally, we took first steps to learning one of the simpler Irish fiddle ornaments. Ed went away with some recordings of the jig to play along with. Great work, Ed! Looking forward to our next lesson!Bradon's response :
