About Steven
I am a retired academic (an architect, actually) who discovered swimming teaching almost by accident. Now I would say it is the most important thing I have ever done in my life, second only to raising my children.
Because I am now semi-retired, I will only take on a small number of students - few enough that I can stay focused on each of their needs.

In the distraction-free environment of your own poo, I can tailor my teaching to your child's unique needs. My teaching is old-school without toys or aids. Children don't need those for motivation. Just like you, they are motivated by their own progress. Step by step, and quite quickly, they realise their potential to swim well and thus look forward to their lessons.
I invite you, as the parent, to learn how to teach also, by joining us both in the water. You will not master all the techniques I can use, but you will learn things you can do yourself, to reinforce your child's learning.
Even if your child is afraid of the water right now, with patience and understanding I will teach them the correct way to swim freestyle and backstroke. If you like, I can add butterfly and breast stroke for fun. The terminology and techniques your child will learn from me, are consistent with those taught elsewhere, so they will have no problems assimilating into any group class or squad program.

Steven worked with me on a brief I found confusing and provided insight into the thinking behind the brief and what was expected. His deep experience of both the profession and the school studio process was invaluable in progressing the design. He wasn't afraid to set me straight on ideas that were unsuitable or inappropriate and I thank him for that!
Prof Steven taught me architectural history at University of Tasmania. I was always amazed how he was able to make, easily the driest subject, interesting and digestible. His passion and excitement for history and cycling is palpable and translates across in the way he runs his classes and expresses himself. I often find much more retention, interest, understanding and ability to apply concepts he has taught, compared to classes by others.
I also had the opportunity of following him to Italy for a grand tour that he curated, planned and ran as an elective, in partnership with his chosen local tour guide. He stressed importance in experiencing history in chronological order, and it certainly was experiential to stand, touch and sketch/paint in those spaces we only learnt about through class slides or books. An unforgettable privilege to have attended such a master class about history, art and life.
Be it in class or in casual conversation, Steven speaks with much intelligence, humour and candour. Trust that you will be in good hands and guided well in your learning.
Steven taught me architectural history at the University of Tasmania, he also took me and a small group of students on a grand tour through Italy as an elective which was absolutely the best elective I did!
Stevens knowledge and passion for architecture and his students is amazing. Unlike some architectural academics, Steven has real world industry experience! I always found Steven cared about his students and actively engaged with the cohort. Steven's lectures and teaching methods were always interesting and engaging, and unlike other architectural history lectures, I never fell asleep! Steven always found a way to make even the driest history teachings interesting and engaging.
I can't recommend Steven more highly, between his industry and academic experiences, his love for bikes and architecture you'll not find a better teacher!Steven taught me in many and varied architecture design, history and theory courses during my time at University of Newcastle, his advice and leadership would not have got me through otherwise, not to mention completely excel and graduate top of the state in 2013! With his support I was also accepted into a PhD which I did not end up pursuing at the time. I'm so grateful for the personal and professional relationship we built over my uni career. Steven always took the time and care when teaching and turoring, giving rock solid advice and guidance. I would highly recommend Steven to help you advance your architecture education and training.
Dr Fleming is easily the most clear, helpful, and thoughtful teacher of architecture I ever had. He is very easy-going, and can explain difficult concepts in fresh and dynamic ways. He is an expert in architectural design, but his knowledge is grounded in his deep knowledge of architectural history and theory. He can show you how your design decisions are derived from the architectural canon. If you learn from him, your knowledge of architecture will greatly increase and you'll be able to impress your teachers, friends, and colleagues with clever insights.
Dr Fleming is also fun, and really loves sharing his profound knowledge with others. I guarantee you're getting great value for money.I've worked with Steven in developing up the Liveable City strategies and programs for Newcastle, encompassing urban design, public domain and transport. His ideas are thoughtful and thought-provoking - a genuine original thinker.
I’ve had the pleasure of learning under Steven, he is not only extremely knowledgeable in architecture, but he has an infectious joy for the discipline and great enthusiasm for teaching!

If you are like most parents, you will use my one-on-one lessons to help your child get more from the group swimming lessons they are already receiving. But while group classes are motivating and vibrant, individual lessons are more effective when it comes to identifying and correct faults. If not addressed, these faults can become entrenched habits.
One-on-one lessens are expensive, but you have to consider the value. In a half hour group lesson with 3 other children (or a one hour lessen with another 7), your own child will be lucky to receive 6 minutes of proper attention. If you paid $20 for that class, the rate for one-on-one service would $200 per hour.
The reason I don't have to charge you $200 per hour, is you will providing the pool! Swimming schools have the cost of that asset factored into the price of their lessons.
Another reason to help your child with private lessons, is to save yourself time. Instead of only getting one block of 6 real minutes with each trip to the pool, you can stay at home and have ten blocks of 6 minutes delivered right to you, with every one-on-one lesson!
