About Tom
I have taught cello since 2012, both privately and in schools. During this period, I have gained experience teaching a range of students (from young children to adults), and have succeeded in developing technical proficiency and a love of playing the instrument.
My knowledge of cello pedagogy also stems from my studies undertaken at two tertiary institutions - Monash University in Melbourne, and Kärntner Landeskonservatorium in Klagenfurt, Austria

About the lesson

At the core of my lessons is a focus on developing ergonomic body use - from this, a reliable and relatively effortless technique can be achieved. Having struggled previously with playing-related injuries, this is very important to me.
I also like to teach new skills/concepts in progressive steps e.g. a difficult passage might be played with only open strings, then in different parts of the bow, then as originally written in a slow tempo. In my experience, working like this often results in students achieving a good comprehension of the particular skill.
Finally, I like to make music with my students. Technique is important, but applying it and remembering why we practice scales and exercises is equally vital!
