About Zoe

Welcome! I’m Zoe, and I’d be happy to guide you in learning Chinese.

I hold a Master’s degree in Chinese Literature and a PhD in Sociology, and I worked as an Associate Professor for 17 years, teaching, supervising, and conducting research across a wide range of social sciences. I’ve had the privilege of working with international students from many countries and as a visiting scholar in the USA, Germany, Australia, and Hong Kong. These experiences have helped me develop strong communication skills and a genuine respect for diverse cultures. Since moving to Australia in 2022, I have expanded my work to teaching Chinese language and culture, supporting students at various levels.

My teaching style is student-centred, communicative, and highly adaptive. I focus on creating a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable speaking, exploring ideas, and building confidence. Whether you are a complete beginner or an advanced learner, I tailor each lesson to your goals, interests, and pace, ensuring that learning remains engaging, practical, and enjoyable.

Alan has a solid foundational knowledge of Chinese. From our initial session, I can see that continuing his Chinese learning will give him more opportunities to practise and gradually move from literal expressions to more figurative or abstract ones. It will also help him become familiar with a wide range of topics and expressions across different contexts, allowing him to naturally understand Chinese culture, history, and society.

Chinese learning also offers a more direct and practical benefit for Alan — it supports his ability to switch smoothly between English and Chinese in work-related settings. As his learning goals and plans become clearer, Chinese study will increasingly meet his individual needs.
