About Laurence

I'm Laurence, a lover, teacher in training, and former student of both German and Italian - with un petit peu of French on the side, too. With around 10 years' experience successfully learning languages, and several years' worth using them practically - which is a totally different ball game - and recently training to teach them, I'm well positioned to help you learn. Credentials: German to GCSE (A*), International Baccalaureate (7/7), and Degree level (2:1) with around 6 months in total on courses and internships in German-speaking countries. Approx level C1. Italian to GCSE (A*), International Baccalaureate (6/7), approx level B2. French to GCSE (A*), approx level B1.

About the lesson

Guten Tag, Servus, Moin, Grüezi, Hallo. Did you know there are several ways of greeting someone in German, depending where you are? I recently spent a week speaking German in the Alps on my way to summit Mt Ortler, in Südtirol - a challenge for sure! I'm concerned with the fundamentals of learning language, but also applying it practically! This means I focus a lot on speaking and writing, rather than only teaching you grammar or getting you to read lots. Knowing a language in theory is totally different from actually using it! The two most important foundations of speaking German are... 1) Getting word order right, aka Satzbau. It's very different to English (most other languages, in honesty), but once you learn the basics, it becomes like second nature. 2) Grammatical cases: an even bigger step, which will get introduced further down the line than Satzbau - but once you've got them, you'll feel an amazing sense of accomplishment!
