About Douglas
Briefly about me, I grew up in northwestern Minnesota and earned a BS in Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Minnesota. Then I worked as an engineer for many years in the Minneapolis, MN area. During 15 of those years, in addition to my day job, I taught evening classes at Hennepin County Technical college as a certified adult education instructor so I have actual classroom teaching experience. Later, I studied business management in an evening MBA program at St. Thomas University in St. Paul, MN. Beginning in 2000, I've held program management positions in both commercial and defense industries managing large budget programs. For the past several years I've tutored students in courses ranging from 6th thru 12th grade math to college business courses such as accounting, economics, and statistics. Most of my tutoring for the past three years has been online using Zoom, and I enjoy tutoring in person with students as well.
Personally, I am married and have 4 adult progeny, and am retired from my career work so that I can work with young people through tutoring.

Over the past 4 years, have tutored 40+ high school students in Algebra I & II, Geometry, Physics, and pre-Calculus; and college students in Accounting, Economics, and Statistics, nearly all of them online using either Zoom or Skype. This includes increasing the student’s motivation for learning the topic, providing additional resource material to help the students understand procedures for solving all kinds of math problems, and teaching them how to take exams so that they can relax, focus, and earn better grades.
My teaching & coaching approach is relaxed with a strong focus on the material to be mastered. First, I work with my students to assure they understand the basics – if needed, we backtrack to master those basics because often the students decided to seek a tutor when they were halfway through the course. Then, we need to ‘double time’ our efforts to get them caught up and understand the new material being presented each week by their instructor.
