About Austin
Hi, I’m a FIDE Candidate Master and the 2026 Australian Major Chess Champion. I’ve been competing at a high level for many years and have consistently ranked among the top junior players in Australia.
Alongside competing, I’ve developed a strong interest in coaching and have over 2 years of experience teaching students from beginner to intermediate levels. I enjoy helping students understand chess in a clear and practical way, rather than just memorizing theory.
As a current student myself, I understand the challenges of balancing study and improvement, and I aim to make lessons efficient, engaging, and focused on real progress. My goal is to help each student build confidence, improve their results, and genuinely enjoy the game.

My coaching is focused on helping students improve efficiently and achieve real results in games and tournaments. As a FIDE Candidate Master and Australian Major Champion, I bring both high-level playing experience and over 2 years of coaching students from beginner up to ~1700 FIDE.
Each lesson is tailored to the student’s level and goals. I typically structure lessons around a combination of tactical training, calculation exercises, game analysis, and practical opening/endgame understanding. For competitive players, I also focus on tournament preparation, time management, and building a reliable repertoire.
Lessons are usually 60 minutes and can be conducted online or in person (Brisbane). I aim to make sessions engaging, structured, and improvement-focused rather than just theory-based.
My coaching is suitable for beginners building strong fundamentals, as well as intermediate and competitive players looking to improve rating and performance in tournaments.

Perfect! My 14 year old son has loved having chess tutoring with Austin. He has helped him with lots of new methods and advice and given recommendations of local clubs to join. We look forward to more sessions in the future.
