About Zara

Hi, I’m Zara! I’m a qualified teacher and former Head of Sociology with several years of experience teaching AQA A-Level Sociology.

I graduated from Durham University with a First-Class degree in Sociology before completing the Teach First Training Programme, gaining my PGDE at a Distinction and Qualified Teacher Status, while teaching KS3-4 Religious Studies and KS5 (A-level) Sociology. I went on to lead the subject, teaching students across both Year 12 and Year 13. Most recently, Sociology was the second-highest performing subject in my school and has produced excellent results.

I’ve recently decided to move on from full-time classroom teaching, but Sociology remains a subject I genuinely love teaching. I particularly enjoy helping students build confidence, make sense of topics they may have struggled with in class, and develop the exam technique needed to turn their knowledge into higher grades. I thrive working one-to-one with an A-Level student, helping them identify gaps in their knowledge and turn strong sociological understanding into high-mark exam answers.

Having recently taught the AQA course myself, I have an extensive bank of tried-and-tested resources, revision materials and exam practice that I use to make tutoring focused and personalised to each student, whether they are working at an E and want to improve or are working at an A* and want to maintain that for the real exam.

About the lesson

My lessons are tailored to each student and focus on the areas where they can make the biggest improvement. I specialise in AQA A-Level Sociology and can support students with both subject knowledge and, crucially, turning that knowledge into high-quality exam answers.

A typical 60-minute lesson might involve identifying gaps in knowledge, revisiting difficult topics, working through exam questions together and developing essay plans or model responses. I place a particular emphasis on exam technique: helping students understand exactly what AQA questions are asking, structure 10, 20 and 30-mark answers effectively, and use analysis and evaluation to reach the higher grade bands.

I am a qualified teacher and former Head of Sociology with several years of experience teaching AQA Sociology at A-Level. I have taught across both Year 12 and Year 13 and have extensive resources, revision materials and exam practice that I can adapt to each student.

Lessons are suitable for Year 12 and especially Year 13 students at any level, whether they need help building confidence with the course or are aiming to move from a B to an A/A*.
