About Ruting

My name is Ruting, a dedicated Mandarin tutor. I have been teaching over 70 students in different age groups with various objectives for the past three years. I obtained a master's degree in Public and International Affairs from the University of Ottawa, and a bachelor's degree in Public Administration from Dalian Maritime University in China. I started tutoring international students since undergrad, and I helped them improve their Conversational Mandarin, and be more confident while expressing themselves in Mandarin. This experience enables me to think from the perspective of a non-Mandarin speaker, which inspires me to teach in a more intelligible way. I am very easy-going, open-minded, caring, and extremely flexible. I love tailoring my teaching style and content according to students' unique needs. Learning how to speak Mandarin, or any foreign language, can be intimidating, but we can make it a fun and rewarding experience! Language is the key to a group of friends, a culture, a society, and a history of thousands of years. I can't wait to guide you in Mandarin learning and share my culture with you! In my spare time, I enjoy traveling, exploring local cafes and restaurants, hiking, cycling, and learning new languages (French, Japanese at the moment).

  • 1) When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

During my undergraduate years, I began helping international students in China improve their conversational Mandarin, which I found deeply rewarding. Since 2022, I have continued tutoring students across Canada and the United States, supporting them in achieving their language goals. Over time, I’ve worked with more than 100 learners from diverse backgrounds. What motivates me to continue is the fulfillment of seeing my students make real progress—watching their confidence and skills grow is incredibly meaningful. I’m eager to keep channeling my passion into teaching and empowering my students.
  • 2) What makes you passionate about your subject?

I tutor Mandarin, my native language, and I’m passionate about sharing it with others. I believe language is a bridge to culture, history, and new perspectives. When students show interest in learning Mandarin, it motivates me to not only teach the language but also introduce them to the richness of the culture behind it.
  • 3) What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

What I value most about tutoring is the opportunity to help others achieve their goals and the trust my students place in me. I approach every session with gratitude and a strong sense of responsibility. I ensure each lesson is well-structured, highly informative, and focused on clear, practical takeaways. My teaching is results-oriented—every session is purposeful, with no time wasted.
  • 4) Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.

One of my role models is my graduate school professor who taught international relations. He is exceptionally knowledgeable and experienced, with a remarkable ability to explain complex ideas clearly. What stood out most was his open-mindedness—he encouraged students to share their perspectives freely and fostered a thoughtful, engaging learning environment. He truly mastered his craft, and I aspire to bring the same clarity, openness, and depth to my own teaching.
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

My keys to success are kindness, well-structured and organized teaching, and a strong focus on my students’ needs. I prioritize active listening, regular check-ins, and ongoing review to ensure steady progress. I also see learning as a collaborative process—teamwork between teacher and student is essential for achieving the best results.
